Timothy Pilgrim, Australian Privacy Commissioner: Privacy reforms pass Australian Parliament -
There is a significant privacy law reform process currently underway. If enacted, the Privacy Amendment (Enhancing Privacy Protection) Bill will strengthen the Privacy Commissioner's enforcement powers. For example, the Bill provides that the Privacy Commissioner will be able to enforce civil penalties after conducting an investigation on his own initiative. The Bill was recently reviewed by the Senate, a report was released yesterday on the Australian Parliament Senate website.
