Section 82 of the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) provides for the establishment of the Privacy Advisory Committee (PAC). The role of PAC is to assist and advise the Australian Information Commissioner (Information Commissioner) in matters relating to privacy.
The Privacy Advisory Committee:
- provides advice on privacy issues and the protection of personal information
- provides strategic input to key projects undertaken by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC)
- fosters collaborative partnerships between key stakeholders to further promote the protection of individual privacy
- promotes the value of privacy to the Australian community, business and government
- supports office accountability to external stakeholders.
PAC meets twice a year, with secretariat functions provided by the OAIC.
Members
PAC consists of no more than eight members and is convened by the Information Commissioner. All members except the Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner are appointed by the Governor-General.

Terms of Reference
The current terms of reference assume a strategic advisory role for the Privacy Advisory Committee, and are based on the functions of the Committee as set out in Part VII of the Privacy Act.
