There are several Australian Government agencies that have information policy responsibilities. If you have not been able to find the information you need on the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner website, the agencies and resources below may be helpful.
Attorney-General’s Department
The Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department has responsibility for the Australian Government’s policy on intellectual property and copyright. The Attorney-General’s Department has issued the Intellectual Property Principles for Australian Government Agencies and the Australian Intellectual Property Manual.
Australian Bureau of Statistics
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) collects, compiles, analyses and distributes statistical information about Australia. Datasets about a range of topics including employment, industry, health, population and the environment are available on the ABS website.
Australian Government Information Management Office
The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) is responsible for the application of information and communications technologies (ICT) across Australian Government administration, information and services. AGIMO is relevantly responsible for:
- data.gov.au, which provides public access to a wide range of government datasets
- the coordination and governance of whole of government and cross-jurisdictional ICT
- the Government 2.0 agenda
- Better practice guidelines for the provision of online services
- Australians’ use of the Internet and e-government services
- web publishing and web content accessibility guidelines.
National Archives of Australia
The National Archives of Australia:
- helps Australian Government agencies create and manage their records
- makes records in the national archival collection that have entered the open access period publicly available.
- The National Archives of Australia is responsible for the implementation of the Digital Transition Policy, which aims to move Australian Government agencies to digital recordkeeping for efficiency purposes.
AusGOAL
The Australian Government Open Access and Licensing Framework (AusGOAL) provides support and guidance to that Australian Government and related sectors to facilitate open access to publicly funded information. AusGOAL assists organisations to manage their risks when publishing information and data in a way that drives innovation and entrepreneurial activities, providing enhanced economic and social benefits to the wider community. - the Licence Chooser.
Australian National Data Service
The Australian National Data Service (ANDS) is responsible for leading the creation of a cohesive national collection of research resources and a richer data environment that will:
- make better use of Australia's research outputs
- enable Australian researchers to easily publish, discover, access and use data
- enable new and more efficient research.
ANDS has published a number of guides to assist researchers, government and the community to use, publish and cite data.
