Stoudemire finds a new home.
Yesterday it was revealed that after five years as a member of the New York Knicks, the franchise agreed to buyout the remaining $23.4 million of Amar’e Stoudemire‘s contract, effectively making him a free agent. Word had spread throughout the league that the big man’s tenure with the Knicks may be through and several teams showed interest, including the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns, the team which initially drafted him out of High School back in 2002.
Amar’e, who had long expressed his interest in playing for a contender, formally agreed to a deal that would net him the prorated veteran minimum with the Dallas Mavericks late Monday night (February 16th) and will officially become a member of the team on Wednesday 5pm EST after clearing waivers. ESPN had reported that the Mark Cuban owned Mavs were the frontrunners for Amar’e, wanting to add much needed depth to their front court in preparation for the playoffs.
Stoudemire issued a statement after parting ways with the now league worst 10-43 Knicks.
“Although I leave the Knicks with a heavy heart, I wish the organization the best of luck. Once a Knick always a Knick.”
