SPOILER ALERT: The Walking Dead gets gruesome as two characters eaten alive by zombies outside of Alexandria safe zone

The Walking Dead proved again on Sunday that no one is safe as two characters were gruesomely devoured by zombies.

Noah (Tyler James Williams) had been talking of forging a future in the safe zone of Alexandria.

His hopes of becoming Alexandria's future builder were mercilessly shredded by a hoard of the ravenous undead.

The likeable Noah was pressed up against a revolving door while walkers tore chunks off him from behind and blood pumped from severed arteries in torrents.

Reckless fighter Aiden (Daniel Bonjour) also perished in a hideous bloodbath.

It was a particularly rough night for Glenn (Steven Yeun) who had to watch both vile massacres in close proximity.

Glenn and Noah had become trapped in the revolving door amid a pack of zombies while Nicholas (Michael Traynor) had made a selfish run for it.

'Don't let go,' were Noah's final screams to Glenn, as he was pulled to his demise and his intestines were removed for walker lunch.

The show opened dramatically with Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) ruthlessly tearing apart his bible.

In another heinous move the shady priest told Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh) that Rick Grimes and his posse were about to betray her, and demolish the 'paradise' she has worked so hard to build.

'Satan, he disguises himself as the angel of light, I'm afraid that false light is here,' he told her.

'They are not good people,' he declared.

Meanwhile protagonist Rick (British actor Andrew Lincoln) discovered that Jessie's owl sculpture had been needlessly destroyed.

'You got any enemies?' he asked Jessie (Alexandra Breckenridge).

Citing the 'broken window theory' of urban policing Rick made it his mission to find the culprit.

Before his entrails were devoured Noah had asked Reg to teach him how to build things - to help the community.

'So you're in it for the long haul,' said the unwitting Reg (Steve Coulter).

But Aiden, Glenn, Nicholas, Noah and Tara were then forced to leave the compound to find technical supplies to fix the power grid.

As their van pulled away a song unsubtly blasted out of the speakers with the lyrics: 'Now you're doing to die'.

Cowardly Eugene (Dylan McDermitt) was not happy about being put in harm's way.

'You better start pulling your weight,' Tara told him sternly.

'I got you all to DC' he retorted as she stared at him incredulously.

'You didn't get us here, we got you here,' she spat back.

On a walk through the storage area they found a hoard of hungry walkers looking for flesh.

Tara was the first to find the required components.

Aiden was then confronted by a walker wearing body armour and a grenade.

After shooting at him repeatedly Aiden hit the grenade, which exploded and impaled him on two spikes.

The others tried to remove Aiden as he twitched on his spikes, but the zombies advanced and he was gobbled up.

In a face off with a walker Eugene was too shaky to fire his gun.

But later, when Tara was bleeding to death, he developed some chutzpah and vowed to help her.

Finding some inner courage he valiantly slung Tara over his shoulder and carried her to safety – killing walkers one-handed along the way.

Eugene then showed extra gumption by yelling for walkers as a distraction to aide the others.

Outside burly ginger Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) got into a zombie stew while collecting construction materials for a wall.

When Francine (Dahlia Legault) hurt herself the other men ran off to save themselves - leaving Abraham to take the brunt.

It became clear that an Alexandria safe zone rule was to abandon anyone in trouble for the greater good – which didn't sit well with Rick's people.

On a side note silver-haired widow Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) made cookies with kid Sam, who was desperately trying to soften her mood.

The troubled child then admitted that he might have broken the owl statue in rage.

'Can I have a gun,' he asked Carol.

When she asked 'who is it for?' he ran away.

Carol then deduced that Jessie's boozy doctor husband Pete was abusing her.

'There's only one way this can go, you're going to have to kill him,' she told Rick.

The drama continues next week with the penultimate episode of the fifth season of The Walking Dead.
