A diminutive and dressy accessory, just right for holding little essentials when you’re stepping out for parties, proms or dance club nights under the stars!

 

Skill Level: Intermediate

Finished size: 3.75” high, 13” circumference, 4” diameter across base

Materials:

100 yds. DK weight cotton-blend novelty yarn

Sample shown in Filatura di Crosa “Tiffany” (44% cotton, 39% viscose, 13% polyamide, 1% polyester, 104 yds/95 m per 1.75 oz/50 g ball) in color #05 Pink Diamond

 

Crochet hook size G/6 (4.00 mm), or size needed to achieve gauge

Gauge: 18 sts & 22 rows = 4” in single crochet on size G/6 (4.00 mm) hook

Terms/Abbreviations: back loop only (BLO), beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), each (ea), half double crochet (hdc), hook (hk), increase (inc), loop (lp), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), reverse single crochet (rev sc), single crochet (sc), skip (sk), slip stitch (sl st), space (sp), stitch (st), yarn over (yo)

Pattern notes:

Bag is worked in one piece from base to top.

Do not join or turn at end of rounds but continue in same direction throughout.

Base of bag is worked in continuous rounds.  Body of bag is worked in joined rounds. Follow pattern for instructions on when to use each technique.

Special stitches/Techniques:

Magic beginning ring: wrap yarn around finger once, insert hook into this yarn ring, yarn over and pull loop through, chain as instructed and work first round over strands of ring. After completing the first few rounds, pull gently on yarn tail to close center of ring.

Reverse single crochet (rev sc): Work in single crochet from left to right, instead of in the usual direction from right to left.

Shell: Work 5 double crochet all in same stitch.

Bag

Notes: Rounds 1-10 are worked in continuous rounds. Use contrast thread marker to note beginning of rounds and carry it up as you work.

Do not join or turn at end of rounds but continue working in same direction throughout.

Rnd 1: Ch 4, join into ring (or use magic beginning ring method); ch 1, work 6 sc in ring; do not join, do not turn (6 sc)

Rnd 2 (inc rnd): 2 sc in ea sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 3 (inc rnd): 2 sc in ea sc around (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc in ea sc around.

Rnd 5 (inc rnd): 2 sc first sc, sc in next sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, rep from * around (36 sc)

Rnd 6: Sc in ea sc around.

Rnd 7 (inc rnd): 2 sc in first sc, sc in ea of next 2 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in ea of next 2 sc, rep from * around (48 sc)

Rnd 8: Sc in ea sc around.

Rnd 9 (inc rnd): 2 sc in first sc, sc in ea of next 3 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in ea of next 3 sc, rep from * around (60 sc)

Rnd 10: Sc in ea sc around.

 

Begin working in joined rounds:

Note: Do not turn at end of rounds but continue working in same direction throughout.

Rnd 11: Sc in back loop only (BLO) of ea sc around, join with sl st (60 sc)

Rnds 12-13: Working through both loops as normal, ch 1, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st (60 sc)

 

Begin shell pattern rounds:

Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in same st, sk next 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc (shell completed), sk next 2 sc, *sc in next sc, sk next 2 sc, shell in next sc, sk next 2 sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (10 shells)

Rnd 15: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st at base of beg ch-3 (beg half shell completed), *sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * around, ending last rep with 2 dc in same place as beg half shell, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.

Rnd 16: Ch 1, sc in same st, shell in next sc, *sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st.

Rnds 17-18: Rep Rnds 15-16.

Rnd 19 (eyelet rnd): Ch 4 (counts as first hdc and ch 2), sc in center dc of next shell, ch 2, *hdc in next sc, ch 2, sc in center dc of next shell, ch 2, rep from * around, join with sl st to second ch of beg ch-4 (20 sps)

Rnd 20: Ch 1, sc in ea hdc, sp and sc around, join with sl st (40 sc)

Rnd 21 (shell border rnd): Ch 1, sc in same st, sk next sc, shell in next sc, sk next sc, *sc in next sc, sk next sc, shell in next sc, sk next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (10 shells)

Rnd 22 (edging rnd): Ch 1, work rev sc in ea dc and sc around, join with sl st. Fasten off and weave in all tails.

 

Chain ties (make 2):

Leaving 8” tails at each end for tying and weaving in, ch 125. Fasten off.

Finishing:

Beginning at one side of bag, weave chain tie through eyelets on Rnd 19. Holding both ends of same chain together, tie a double knot about 1” from end. Weave tails through remnants of chain, working towards the double knot. Bury tails securely by going through knot several times.

Repeat with other chain tie, starting on opposite side of bag and weaving through eyelets on Rnd 19 in opposite direction from first chain tie.

Pull ties gently to close top of bag.

Optional: If desired, a fabric lining or small plastic container may be added to inside of bag.
