Turning back the clock! Mel Gibson, 59, sports much darker hair and trimmer figure on dinner outing in West Hollywood

At 29 years old he was the first person to be named People's Sexiest Man Alive in 1985.

And three decades later, Mel Gibson appears to be fighting the clock to maintain the looks that helped to catapult him to stardom.

The Oscar winner emerged with much darker silver hair and a trimmer figure than he did a month earlier as he made his way to dinner at AGO Restaurant in West Hollywood on Friday.

The Braveheart actor was dressed casually for the occasion in a navy blue button-down shirt, jeans and black shoes.

He flashed a wide smile and walked with his wallet in his hand - likely to shower the Italian eatery's staff with gratuities - as he has a reputation as a generous tipper.

Mel did not appear to be accompanied by anyone as he made his way inside.

Last month the Maverick star sported a fuller figure and a pearly coif during an excursion in Los Angeles.

Perhaps his hair touch-up comes as he is readying to promote his film Blood Father, which is due for a release this year.

In the action thriller he stars as an ex-con who reunites with his estranged 16-year-old daughter to protect her from dealers, opposite Elisabeth Röhm, Diego Luna and William H. Macy.

More ahead: The actor will star in Blood Father, which is due for a release this year; he will also direct Hacksaw Ridge, which hits theaters in 2016

The role of father is certainly not a stretch for Mel, who has eight children.

The What Women Want actor has six sons and one daughter with his ex-wife Robyn Gibson, and has a daughter with estranged partner Oksana Grigorieva.

Speaking to Extra's Mario Lopez, he said he sees his relationship with four-year-old Lucia as another learning experience as a father.

'She's so cool…It's amazing. It's full of wonder…and I'm not a youngster any more …It's my second daughter. I'm getting a chance to do it better.'

Meanwhile, the actor will soon direct the upcoming drama Hacksaw Ridge, which follows the true story of World War II medic and conscientious objector Desmond Doss.

Starring Andrew Garfield, the film will hit theaters in 2016.

For Mel, stepping behind the camera is a part that is more suited to his talents, he explained to Mario Lopez during the interview.

'I'm pretty good at directing…I think I got some statues for it,' referring to his Best Picture and Best Director Academy Awards for 1995's Braveheart.

The veteran actor added: 'I think I'm a better director than actor…I hope somebody gives me an argument on that.'

And Mel might be right.

With a stalled acting resume since his 2006 booze and legal woos aired publicly, he might want to position himself to work in Hollywood from the director's chair.

His last major starring role, in 2012's Get the Gringo didn't even see a regular national release, instead it was jettisoned to video on demand distribution. The Beaver, released in 2011, was another box office disappointment.
