Book title: RESCUED BY MY DENTIST, subtitle, New Solutions to Health Crisis, shows the influence of the oral cavity on human health. Such commonplace things as high-speed drilling, use of mercury fillings and other toxic restorations, the root canal treatment of teeth, and infected jawbones, all serve as unsuspected causes of much, and perhaps most, of the sicknesses and the ailments in our society. Forty seven case histories contrast the patient symptoms and complaints before dental treatment with the patient's improved condition after dental care. Each case points to the oral cavity as being a part of the human body that must not be overlooked; the dentist is, or should be, a key player on the healing team. The author describes cutting-edge technology that allows the practitioner to pick compatible dental materials and much more; it helps to find which teeth are causing havoc in the body and to locate the diseased, infected regions in the jawbone. Root canal treated teeth which are often infected and toxic, despite a carefully done root canal treatment, serve as additional causes of common health problems. The author reveals how teeth may be damaged by the heat and suction of high-speed drilling and how switching to low-speed drilling allows dentists to avoid the tooth damage that can be done by drilling. A Tooth-Body Chart shows the organs and body regions that are related to each tooth location, showing the importance of the oral cavity to the health of the whole body.

"Something To Chew On" is a Health Manual first and foremost, but it is a Health Manual with a difference. The difference is a new way of seeing, a new and deeper understanding, a new perspective. There are another seven new perspectives:

The First New Perspective, - The Person As Partner This approach is quite different from the usual approaches to dental disease. Traditionally the focus is on the teeth and what can be done to them. The Second New Perspective, The Person As A Whole - Holistic Dentistry - Understanding The Whole Person. This approach recognises the complex nature of a human being and the many factors that may be at play in problems manifesting in the mouth.

The Third New Perspective, - the Mouth in all its glory. The mouth is often seen as nothing more than a chewing device!! This book provides a very different way of looking. This new perspective allows a completely new understanding of the mouth and all its functions. We go beyond a purely mechanical view of the mouth as a 'food chewing system'

The Fourth New Perspective, - Understanding the Nature of Habit. The negative spiral and how to so bring a positive upward spiral.

The Fifth New Perspective, - Understanding why we have failed in the past and how we can achieve success – We move from trying to change an Effect without reference to the Cause which is, of course impossible to concentration of our effort on the shifting of Cause which must produce a shift in effect.

The Sixth New Perspective, - Dealing with Stress as a Priority Once stress is understood as the source of the problem, our treatment becomes the dissolution of stress in all its various disguises, - anxiety, worry, fear, resentment, upset, regret etc.

The Seventh New Perspective, - The Gentle Approach is a Requirement not an Optional Extra. To be gentle may sound like an option, something which can be used or not. Gentleness and patience are essential to healing because they dissolve stress and tension which produce disease in the first place.

With the recent upswing in professional ethical misconduct, a comprehensive reeducation in ethical concepts is imperative. This text represents my understanding of the ethical principles from early Greek society to today's society. It clearly outlines the logical historical beginnings of ethical thought, gives students a greater appreciation for the validity of established ethical concepts, provides for a greater understanding of the various aspects of professional ethics and legal issues, and presents workable mechanisms for the prevention, management, and resolution of ethical and/or legal situations in the realm of dentistry.

While other texts on this subject appear to be written to appeal primarily to one audience (i.e. dentists or dental hygienists); this text will be valuable asset to dental students, dental hygiene students, practicing dentists, and practicing dental hygienists. By utilizing a simple, 'to the point' approach to dental ethics and legal issues; I feel that anyone who reads my textbook will benefit from my apporach to the subject matter.

The specific questions that this book will address are listed as follows:

  • What is ethics?
  • Where and how did ethics begin?
  • How are ethics, religion, and the law related as guides for our actions?
  • Are the concepts of Aristotle, Aquinas, and others valid for modern-day professional applications?
  • How do ethical principles relate to the dental profession?
  • What are some of the consequences for violations of ethical principles?
  • What happens when ethical violations become legal problems, and what types of civil and/or criminal issues may practitioners face in today's society?
  • How can practitioners minimize, manage and resolve the various ethical and/or legal situations they may encounter in modern dentistry and dental hygiene?
