'I fell into the deepest depression': Madonna says that sending daughter Lourdes, 18, to college was 'devastating' on Ellen show

For Madonna, that backwards tumble on stage at the BRIT Awards didn't compare to the pain she felt when daughter Lourdes went off to college.

The 56-year-old Material Girl spoke about this difficult time during her appearance to The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, the first of a week-long visit.

Madonna confided that sending Lourdes, 18, off to the University Of Michigan last fall was 'an absolutely devastating experience' that sent her reeling 'into the deepest depression.'

She'd assumed that others were merely overreacting when faced with this milestone.

'My sister said it to me when her son went away. I was like, "Oh my God, you're being so dramatic." She was, like, bawling on the phone,' Madonna told Ellen.

'And then my daughter left me, and I fell into the deepest depression. And I'm always so happy when she calls me and she says, "Mommy, I miss you' or 'I need you to rub my head." I'm still needed.'

At least Madonna can look forward to visits from Lourdes during holidays, and on that last one her daughter brought her sophomore boyfriend who's all of 19.

'He came to our house two weekends ago and spent the weekend with us,' the mother-of-four said. 'He's a very sensible boy – young man, I shouldn't say he's a boy. He's intelligent, so I'm happy about that.'

Ellen then surprised Madonna with a fitting gift - a long and flowing cape with hood that she can wear while visiting Lourdes in Michigan so that no will know who she is.

The amiable talk show host asked the pop siren about her own love life and the youngest man she's dated.

'The youngest was, in the last six years, 22,' Madonna told her. 'Why is everyone so obsessed? Age is a number. Until you're walking with a zimmer frame, you can do whatever you want.'

The discussion, of course, rolled around to THAT embarrassing mishap during a live performance on stage at the BRIT Awards on February 25.

'I didn't fall,' Madonna insisted, adding: 'I was yanked by those lovely little Japanese girls. It's nobody's fault. Actually, if anyone's going to take the blame it's me because at the last minute the producers of the show asked me to enter the O2 Arena from a much further away distance and everyone panicked because my cape was really heavy. My stylist came over and said, "What should we do?" And I said, "I'll just tie the bow tighter around my neck."

'The thing is when I pulled that time it didn't come undone, it went into a knot. Yes, ooh. I think that should be a bigger "ooh",' she told the audience. 'Because that couldn't been - but it wasn't.'

'They pulled and I was desperately trying to get it undone with these very long nails and I couldn't, so I took one step backwards and tried to lift it over my head. But before that happened the girls just yanked with all their might and I went tumbling.'

She said she wasn't hurt but cried when she got to her hotel room because she'd made 'a mistake,' and as to those stories that the designer, Armani, said Madonna was being difficult about the cape, the Express Yourself singer retorted 'total bulls***!'

If Ellen DeGeneres thought she was going to get a week's worth of Madonna for nothing, she was wrong.

The 'one and only' Madonna sent the amiable talk show host a video message ahead of her first day on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that ended with a very risque challenge.

Speaking with a pointedly direct stare and commanding deep voice, Madonna told Ellen: 'I'll come, I'll sing you some songs if YOU promise to wear fishnets. Deal? Deal.'

Ellen - who tends to wear trousers, blazers and trainers while grilling her guests - just happened to have a pair of the femininely frilly tights nearby.

With a gleam in her eye, Ellen rose to the challenge, sort of.

A teaser began with Ellen excitedly telling her audience about what was in store: 'Madonna's going to be here all week long and she sent this message to kick it off. Here she is...'

Rising to the challenge: The amiable talk show host complied - sort of - by brandishing a pair of dummy legs in fishnet stockings on Monday's segment of Ellen

Madonna started by singing off a few lines from her song Living For Love from her album Rebel Heart, 'First you love me and I let you in, made me feel like I was born again.'

Assuming the demeanor of the superstar that she is, Madonna continued by saying, 'Hey, Ellen, I can't wait to see you tomorrow and spend the week with you. We are long lost cousins right? I'll come, I'll sing you some songs if YOU promise to wear fishnets. Deal? Deal.'

Madonna then cinched the message with a conspiratorial wink and thumbs up, and afterwards Ellen mimicked her friend by winking and giving the thumbs up salute.

She means business: Madonna leveled one of her direct stares and commanded, 'I'll come, I'll sing you some songs if YOU promise to wear fishnets. Deal? Deal'

'Threatening! I'm scared,' Ellen confided to her audience. 'Alright, Madonna, you asked for it. I am wearing fishnets.'

Ellen then removed a blanket to reveal her 'legs' dressed in sexy fishnet stockings - that were really props that she could bend backwards and forwards.

The very 'limber' comedienne then proceeded to twist and dangle her fishnet-clad 'legs' in all sorts of contortions.

Hilarious: The talk show host was seen getting chatty with the mega-star in this teaser and it went like this: 'Hi, Madonna'...'Hi, Ellen'
