4G

The Janet 4G project launched to explore the potential use of 4G technology across Janet mobile services.

A number of our customer sites have taken part in a trial to fully test the capabilities of 4G and we partnered with EE to run the trial over their 4G platform.

The aim of the trial was to gather feedback on connectivity and performance of the current generation of 4G; understand the benefits, limitations and use cases for 4G and see how it integrates with existing Janet services such as eduroam.

By identifying the benefits and challenges relating to the use of 4G, we hope to be able to support you in the use of this latest technology.

4G or 4th generation is a set of standards that is being developed as a future successor of 3G - unlike its predecessor, this technology offers true broadband mobile capabilities. Although a number technologies such as LTE, WiMax and UMB claim to be 4G, they do not yet reach the specifications set by the International Telecommunications Union.

True 4G is as yet relatively undeveloped but promises to offer much faster speeds than 3G.  It also uses a more efficient method of transfering data, freeing up bandwidth, and giving a boost to bandwidth hungry activities such as video streaming.

This groups provides a platform for you to discuss 4G technology, trial opportunities and community use cases for true broadband mobile technologies.
