Kraft Foods Group Inc. is recalling more than 6.5 million boxes of its signature macaroni and cheese after customers reported finding small pieces of metal inside.

Kraft was contacted by eight customers about the situation, though no injuries have been reported, the Northfield, Illinois- based company said in a statement Tuesday. The recalled products were shipped nationwide in the U.S., as well as to some South American and Caribbean countries, Kraft said.

“Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it,” Kraft said. “They should return it to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund.”

The recall, which involves a total of 242,000 cases, brings a black eye to a company already coping with sluggish sales growth and a management shake-up in recent months. Kraft, whose brands include Miracle Whip and Oscar Mayer, split off from the global snackmaker Mondelez International Inc. in 2012.

Kraft said the recall was limited to 7.25-ounce (0.2- kilogram) boxes of original-flavor macaroni and cheese with an expiration date between Sept. 18 and Oct. 11. The boxes also feature the code “C2,” which refers to a specific production line, directly below the date. Some of the pasta was also included in multipacks, Kraft said.

“We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed,” the company said.
