History of World Sports Team

World Sports Team was founded in Ireland in 2014 by Eamonn Sayers. Eamonn is the CEO of World Sports Team. His cousin suffered a catastrophic injury playing sport. He created World Sports Team as he did not want to see any family go through what his family did.

You can find him on Twitter and LinkedIn.

WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED?

The World Sports Team is free and easy to join, and has the potential to seriously benefit the international sports community in terms of prevention and support. If a catastrophic injury affects someone close to you, you’ll have complete access to, and support from, our global community. World Sports Team members also have access to original content from their favourite sportspeople and teams.

WHO’S ALREADY ON THE TEAM?

The World Sports Team has been lucky to receive support from Barry Geraghty, Paul McGrath, Brian O’Driscoll, Alan Lynch, and Anna Geary. We would love for you to get involved too.

WHERE DID IT ALL START?

Eamonn Sayers, founder of The World Sports Team, has seen first-hand the effect that a catastrophic sports injury can have on both the injured party and their friends and family. In 2008, Eamonn’s cousin Stuart Mangan suffered a spinal fracture while playing rugby which left him paralysed from the neck down.

Stuart’s friends and family worked tirelessly, exhausting their network of contacts in order to raise the funds necessary to cover Stuart’s medical bills. But although they raised an incredible amount, it was still not enough and Stuart sadly passed away in 2009.

The experience highlighted the enormous supports required by those who have experienced a catastrophic injury in sport, and also the difficulties faced by families and friends in coordinating and generating resources. WST was founded to make fundraising for catastrophic sports injuries easier and more effective.

WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP FOR THE WORLD SPORTS TEAM?

For the early years, the World Sports Team is focused on growing its network of sports stars, clubs, universities, and individuals like yourself.

The network will be used to promote the stories of individual cases of sporting injuries, and will begin to provide a platform to assist with fundraising.

HOW WILL THE FUNDRAISING PLATFORM WORK?

Thankfully, catastrophic injuries in sport are extremely rare, but when they occur, the effects on the individual and their family are profound. WST will directly support life changing services, from urgent medical treatments, to rehabilitation, and counseling.

Every injury is different, and when one of us, a family member or a friend, experiences a catastrophic injury the World Sports Team will share their story with our entire global network and invite them to donate, or assist in fundraising. By leveraging the World Sports Team’s international system of sports stars, we can help to increase the exposure of any fundraising efforts.

Our global network of sportspeople also includes medical and rehabilitation experts. These individuals will bring their personal stories and experiences of injury and recovery, which can aid and inform the medical and practical decision-making of the teams involved in the specific cases we encounter.
