Calm down: Ryan Gosling defended partner Eva Mendes on Twitter on Friday telling everyone her sweatpants comment was 'obviously a joke'
The 34-year-old followed it up the following day with the warning: 'Word to the wise. Don't joke about sweatpants or North Korea. Real hot button issues. Trust me.'
Mendes also Instagrammed a grovelling apology... to her favourite pair of sweatpants.
'Dear favorite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you're the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce,' she wrote beside a picture of the offended apparel.

'Either way it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs.'
The controversy kicked off when the 41-year-old, who's not married to Gosling but they have a six-month-old daughter together, began describing her style to Extra.
'Feminine? I don't know? Because I don't really like pants. I mean I will wear them - figuratively and literally - but I feel much more comfortable in a dress or a skirt or something,' she said.
But when the host asked her if she never wore something lazy around the house, she recoiled in horror.

Emulate Eva in a color block dress by Roksanda
As if it wasn't enough that her boyfriend is Ryan Gosling AND she looks incredible just six months after giving birth to their daughter Esmeralda, now Eva Mendes' outfit is making us green with envy. Or should that be gray?
She was promoting her new Circa collection, so of course her make-up was flawless, but it was Eva's dress that has really got us reaching for our credit cards. It's by Roksanda, and you can buy it now at Net-a-Porter by clicking the link (right).
With that pink panel on the back of this grey dress and the navy waist belt (which Eva switched for a chunkier option) it's a subtle take on Roksanda's signature color block style and we love it. The pleated neckline and skirt make it elegant and flattering, so although it's a bit of an investment, we say it's worth every penny!
But if you want to block it like it's hot on a budget, Christian Michaels or Boohoo can help. We've also managed to find a similar Roksanda dress for a little less, so you'll be spoilt for choice!
Pants on fire: The 41-year-old, seen here wearing the offending item, was slammed on Twitter by offended viewers
'No, no, no. Sweatpants – no, no, no, no, no. You cant do sweatpants. No! Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America: sweatpants. No! You cant do that!'
A number of viewers immediately took to Twitter slamming Mendes for her comments, claiming that attraction should be based on more than just appearances, with some pointing out that The Hitch star isn't even hitched herself.
After Gosling defended his baby momma on Twitter claiming he was wearing sweatpants at that very moment, Ricky Gervais tweeted him jokingly warning him he would 'die alone'.
'@RyanGosling you disgust me. Do you want to die alone or something? Put some trousers on. Love Ricky,' he wrote along with a rather disturbing picture of himself, which Gosling retweeted.
