2015-2016 Faculty Pilot Research Project Application Period is NOW OPEN
The primary objective of the Alaska INBRE Faculty Pilot Research Project program is to provide support for projects in the biomedical and health sciences to faculty involved in biomedical and health research. Projects must align with the research focus areas of the Alaska INBRE program. Proposals are due on April 7th at 5pm AST. If your proposal is submitted by 9am on April 7th, an administrative review will be conducted and feedback provided no later than noon on that date so corrections can be made in advance of the 5pm deadline. Alaska INBRE will host genomics workshops at UAF in Summer 2015
Alaska INBRE will be offering two hands-on Next Generation DNA Sequencing and Sequence Analysis workshops this summer at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Week 1 (Laboratory Techniques) will be held the week of July 27th and week 2 (Computational Techniques) will be held the week of August 3rd. Interested attendees who register by March 6th will be notified of confirmed registration and travel support by March 15th. Registration forms received after March 6th will receive confirmation within 2 weeks. Funding available to attend New Mexico BioInformatics, Science and Technology (NMBIST) Symposium
New Mexico INBRE will be holding the 10th annual New Mexico BioInformatics, Science and Technology (NMBIST) Symposium on Transcriptional Control March 26-27, 2015 at the Drury Plaza Hotel in Santa Fe, NM.
The Alaska INBRE Biomedical Informatics Core encourages students, post docs, and faculty working in this area to submit an abstract and present their work at the Symposium. We further invite you to apply for travel funds with funding preference given to those who have submitted an abstract. Bioinformatics Call for Service Requests
The Alaska INBRE Biomedical Informatics Core is pleased to announce our first Bioinformatics Call for Service Requests. All UA full-time faculty are eligible to apply for these awards of up to $10,000 in services. Applications are due January 9, 2015. Awards will be announced on January 30, 2015. Wanda Bowen joins the Alaska INBRE team
We are extremely pleased to announce that Wanda Bowen is the new Fiscal Officer for Alaska INBRE. Wanda brings over 14 years of research administration experience to this role. Travel Applications for Faculty, Postdocs, and students are now available
UA faculty, postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students may now apply for travel funds to present their research, engage with mentors, and/or obtain technical training in science related to the specific aims of the Alaska INBRE Program. Travel may be to conferences, workshops, trainings, or other academic settings. Please note that applications must be received at least 8 weeks prior to the travel AND by the 15th of the month.

NIH announces new biosketch format
NIH has announced a new biosketch format for application due dates on/after January 25, 2015 (NOT-OD-15-024). The SF424 (R&R) forms page now includes both the old and new biosketch. In addition to the standard biosketch format, NIH also has a Fellowship-specific format that must be used for individual predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships, dissertation research grants (R36), and Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Supplement). After January 25, 2015 the old formats and samples will be removed. Until then, choose the format appropriate for your due date. Although we will be flexible in accepting either format before January 25, the new format is required on/after January 25 . For more information visit the Biosketch FAQ page.
Alaska INBRE Grant Renewed
The University of Alaska Fairbanks received an $18.8 million award from the National Institutes of Health to fund statewide biomedical research and student training focused on the interface of health, disease and the environment in people and animals.
The five-year award will continue support for an NIH Institutional Development Award Network of Biomedical Research Excellence linking university-based researchers and students from UA’s campuses in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau to meet both the research and workforce needs of Alaska’s cities and rural communities. NIGMS Encourages IDP
Individual Development Plans
Action: Strongly encourage the use of individual development plans (IDPs) on all NIGMS-sponsored training and research awards.
At its best, research training is an intentional and purposeful activity that is the product of a thoughtful analysis of the background, interests and needs of each student and postdoctoral trainee. This includes developing a mentoring plan that assesses the needs and goals of each student and postdoc, describes short- and long-term career objectives, and identifies professional development activities needed to reach them. The individual development plan (IDP) is a tool to help in this planning process and also to facilitate communication between mentees and mentors. An IDP should be viewed as a dynamic document that is periodically reviewed and updated throughout an individual’s training. IDPs are of proven value at any stage, from the undergraduate to the postdoctoral level.
