Just a regular guy! Man of the moment James Corden enjoys a low-key day with the family as praise continues to pour in for his Late Late Show debut

Rave reviews, impressive viewing figures and a bravura presenting style have turned James Corden and his new US chat show into an overnight success – but the man of the moment just wanted a quiet day with his family on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old comedian was making an appearance at a local park as accolades continued to pour in following his hugely successful debut on CBS juggernaut The Late Late Show.

Trading the smart suit he wore the previous evening for a casual black T-shirt and jeans, James was clearly pleased with the warm reception he received from American viewers.

The British star kept his eyes shielded behind a pair of shades, while a Spider Man rucksack – no doubt belonging to young son Max – remained slung across one shoulder.

Deadline reported that his debut was watched by 1.66 million viewers, beating his NBC rival Seth Meyers, who attracted 1.528m in the same time slot.

However, it wasn't all good news as his predecessor Craig Ferguson's first show, on January 3, 2005, had 2.1 million total viewers.

But CBS pointed out that compared to the same night last year, James improved viewing figures by 22 per cent (from 1.36 million).

The self-deprecating star had previously warned that he wouldn't do a very good job, and that it could all go spectacularly wrong for him.

But it seems he was incorrect, as TV fans on Monday night rushed to Twitter to heap praise on him as he interviewed the A-list likes of Mila Kunis and Tom Hanks.

After weeks of worries about whether his raw British humour would translate, as well as concerns over his accent and how the US celebrities would take to his full-on style, viewers and reviewers seem to have loved him.

Kicking off the show, the British comedian played to the perception that he is relatively unknown across the Atlantic as he thanked viewers for the honour of being selected for the position - insisting he will try his best not to let them down.

As well as welcoming guests Tom and Mila onto the show: Simon Cowell, Allison Janney, Eddie Redmayne, Shia LaBoeuf and Meryl Streep also appeared in pre-recorded skits as he began his bid to win over the American public.

Afterwards, he told fans on Twitter: 'Well, so many truly lovely messages about the show tonight. I'm blown away, thank you.'
