Brooding 007 confronts a face from the past: Orphan James Bond is stirred by snap with father in dramatic trailer for Spectre

The trailer for Spectre provides a tantalising glimpse into 007’s troubled childhood.

It begins with Naomie Harris as Moneypenny telling Bond that she has discovered a secret.

The spy is then shown holding a photograph of his younger self alongside two male figures.

Fans are already speculating that one of the men in the picture could be Bond’s father, who died along with his wife in a mountain-climbing accident when Bond was 11 – but who is the other?

Is it a face that will come back to haunt Bond? Could it even be Spectre boss Ernst Blofeld?

Moneypenny tells Bond: ‘You’ve got a secret. Something you can’t tell anyone because you don’t trust anyone.’

The 90-second trailer, released online yesterday, raises more questions than it gives answers. But one thing is clear – the action in Spectre will pick up where Skyfall, the last film, left off.

The photograph is among objects found in the wreckage of Skyfall, Bond’s ancestral home, which was destroyed in the last film. The trailer also sees the return of Bond’s adversary Mr White, who appeared in Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace. In one clip White tells Bond: ‘I always knew death would wear a familiar face, but not yours.’

The trailer ends tantalisingly with a shot of a meeting headed by a figure who may or may not be arch-villain Blofeld.
