Preppy in plaid! Kate Mara teams a cute checked shirt dress and plimsolls with a punky leather jacket as she shops for groceries

She might have deferred her place at the Tisch School of the Arts to go straight into acting, but Kate Mara could have passed for a college student on Wednesday.

The actress was spotted in Silverlake, California, wearing a plaid shirt dress and plimsolls as she visited a grocery store.

Adding a white cropped jacket and cross body bag, all Kate was missing was a few books to complete her studious style.

But she recently upped the glamour for the Dior gala last Friday, where she flew solo to mingle with the other high-profile guests including Kate Bosworth and Suki Waterhouse.

The House of Cards star is currently single after splitting with British actor Max Minghella last August following a four-year romance.

She's thrown herself into work though having secured the coveted role of Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four reboot.
