Russell Crowe's ex-wife Danielle Spencer reveals she does not see herself getting back with actor but wants to be 'on the best of terms' and stay friends for their children

They called time on their nine-year marriage in 2012.

And although Danielle Spencer has made it clear that a reconciliation isn't on the cards for herself and estranged husband Russell Crowe, she believes they'll always be friends for the benefit of their two sons Tennyson, eight, and Charles, 11.

The 45-year-old singer, who has had an on-again off-again relationship with the actor since 1989, hopes she and Russell, 50, can have a similar connection in the future as her divorced parents do.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph about her parents' friendly divorce, she said: 'It’s been a great example for me, that is exactly what I would aspire to achieving myself.'

Her parents Don and Julie ended their marriage over 15 years ago, with her mother going on to date her now-husband Gerard, but they still have a strong bond and still do family get-togethers regularly.

Danielle added: 'If my mother’s away, my father and step-dad will get together and watch the footie or something – they’re really great friends.'

However, the blonde beauty has admitted her split with Russell was difficult but she believes any break-up, regardless of whether you're famous or not, is heartbreaking.

Saying that it was hard and the couple had to make a lot of adjustments, she also revealed that they were determined to stay friends for their children: 'I want to be on the best of terms with Russell.'

Despite her confidence that she and the Noah star will not be getting back together any time soon, Russell recently revealed that he hasn't ruled out a reconciliation between them in the future.

Speaking to The Sunday Times newspaper last month, he said: 'I've loved Danielle Spencer since 1989 - that's never going to change - and that's one of those things where I stare at her and go, "How did this fail?" I still can't work it out, because my feelings for her have never changed.'

Asked if there was a chance of a reconciliation, he added: 'Once I commit to something, I stick with it, so you never know...'

The former lovers have remained amicable since their split and are regularly seen out together in public as a family because they believe it's important their children see them as a 'unit'.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper about their complex relationship last year, Danielle said: 'For me the most important thing is for my kids to see that their parents are still a parental unit and that we're still friends and that there is a lot of affection there, so it's the way to go.

'Obviously it's very challenging for him to deal with, and very challenging for me to deal with, but I guess in some ways keeping under the radar is good for my kids.'
