Nestling in nicely! Oscar winner Cate Blanchett carries new daughter Edith in a sling as she and family arrive in a tiny boat for a family break at waterside home

She has been excited about the next chapter of her life, a little girl to add to her brood, and it seems Cate Blanchett is relishing every moment with baby Edith.

The Oscar winner ensured the latest addition to her clan was held close to her heart as she and husband Andrew Upton and their three sons offloaded bags from their boat over the Easter break.

The 45-year-old helped carry cumbersome bags while her sons ferried the bulk of their belongings into a house in Berowa Waters in Sydney on Saturday.

The Cinderella star was all hands on deck as her playwright husband took control of the tiny vessel and ferried his family along the calm waters.

Cate off loaded several outsized bags which appeared to contain children's games to no doubt help keep her sons Dashiell, 13, Roman, 10, and Ignatius, seven, occupied.

Wearing a Puffa jacket and grey slacks, the actress was the epitome of casual chic as she gave the boys helpful instructions while baby Edith looked out.

Cate has been in an ebullient mood of late, thanks to the arrival of the baby daughter she and playwright husband Andrew adopted in the U.S.

She is the couple's only daughter and is no doubt being made a fuss of by her new family.

Speaking of her joy at having another female in the house, Cate's husband told Daily Mail Australia at the premiere of her movie Cinderella: 'It's very exciting'.

She later told Sky News that she and the family are 'absolutely besotted' with their little girl.

'Fourth time round, it's extraordinary!' she said, adding: 'There's a lot of children out there who don't have the good fortune that our biological children do so it's wonderful, it's wonderful to welcome a little girl into our fold.'

The actress, who plays the evil stepmother in the Disney classic remake, has been beside herself since she returned from the States and was spotted clutching her new baby, whose full name is Edith Vivian Patricia Upton.

Quizzed about the adoption laws in Australia when she announced the news, she was diplomatic, telling Fairfax Media 'I think it is ... well I haven't been through it here. It was in the United States.'

The family is due to relocate permanently to America at the end of the year once Upton's term as the Sydney Theatre Company's artistic director ends.

'We're all looking forward to spending more time together in one place. We spent nine years living in England and we loved it. But now we'd like to try America.

'They have terrific [opportunities in] television there and Cate has a very strong film career there, too, obviously,' Upton recently said.

The couple's lives mirror that of other high profile Australians, such as Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness, who also adopted their two children through the American system.

Furness, an outspoken adoption campaigner, founded Adopt Change, a lobby group working tirelessly to overturn Australia's 'anti-adoption' culture, a hangover from the horror of the stolen generations and forced adoption of the 1960s and '70s.

In 2013-14, 317 babies were adopted in Australia, a 76 per cent fall from 25 years ago.

In Australia, adoption is controlled by the states and territories.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said the federal streamlining of laws is being tabled for upcoming COAG meetings.
