Check mates! Jordana Brewster and her son Julian dress in tune with each other and step out for a family lunch as Furious 7 tops the box office

Opening weekend for an actor can be a stressful time, but with her film Furious 7 pulling in $144 million at the US box office, Jordana Brewster was on easy street.

With figures like that, it was no wonder the 34-year-old looked delightfully relaxed and happy as she carried her son Julian to brunch in Santa Monica, California, on Sunday.

Getting a break from promoting the racing flick, the star got a chance to celebrate Easter with her husband Andrew Form and her young son.

For her lunch, the 34-year-old wore a long-sleeved cream-coloured sweater, and checked blue shorts which showed off her toned legs.

She hid her eyes behind sunglasses and let her brunette hair tumble around her shoulders as she balanced in wooden-soled wedge sandals.

Her 19-month-old son Julian rather cutely was dressed in a similar blue gingham checked pattern.

Her husband donned a simple white shirt and trainers for the family outing.

The film's opening weekend puts the $85 million previous biggest opener of the year of Fifty Shades of Grey in the - well - shade.

Furious 7 is now also the top opening in Fast series history, surpassing the $97.3 million of 2013's Fast & Furious 6.

The director of Furious 7 revealed on Friday that the star particularly struggled while filming the movie's latest installment.

James Wan told Buzzfeed it was very emotional for Jordana to film scenes after the passing of co-star Paul Walker as her character Mia is the wife of Paul's Brian O'Conner.

He said: 'It was a tough one for Jordana, for her to try to do the dialogue with him and he's no longer there - it was just so hard.

'I think Jordana was the most emotional through it all. It was doubly surreal when she had to do her scenes with Cody or Caleb, or with John, but pretend that it's Paul. That was a tricky one for me to direct, because I had to be very sensitive to that and just help her along and just try to get her in the right mind set.'

Paul was killed, aged, 40, when the car he was a passenger in crashed in Santa Clarita, California, in November 2013.

His two younger brothers Cody and Caleb, as well as actor John Brotherton, became Paul's body doubles to complete Brian's scenes and Peter Jackson's WETA effects house was called in to use complex CGI to ensure every nuance of Paul's face was visible in the final edit.
