She's been a major player on The Vampire Diaries for years, but Nina Dobrev took to Instagram on Monday to announce she's leaving the show.

The 26-year-old actress has starred in The CW supernatural drama as Elena Gilbert since its premiere in September 2009.

On Monday, Nina posted a photo of herself hugging the show's 42-year-old co-creator and executive producer Julie Plec as she announced her departure from the popular series.

'I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party,' Nina wrote in the caption.

'I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime.

'I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger.

'I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May,' she added.

Moving on: Nina, shown last month in Texas at a film premiere, revealed that she'll be leaving after the show's sixth season wraps in May

Nina promised to share more about her experiences on the show as the May 14 season finale approaches in an exclusive interview in the June issue of SELF magazine.

'I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what's coming, you don't,' she concluded.

Julie also released a statement addressing Nina's departure.

'Saying goodbye to Nina is both bittersweet and beautiful. After six-plus years together, the entire cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries has reached a level of closeness that I don’t think any of us ever expected,' she wrote.

Altogether now: The 26-year-old was joined by fellow cast-members and also members of the crew from the show, which she has starred on since its inception in 2009

'Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold.

'We will miss Nina and the four hundred characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble,' she added.

As well as her shock reveal, Nina had spent the previous day sharing pictures from her raucous goodbye party with pals from the show on Lake Lanier in Georgia.

The snaps showed the pretty brunette on a boat with members of the cast and crew, letting their hair down in the sun and also playing a game with a piñata.

However, for all of her joy over the end of her Vampire Diaries career, fans of the show have not reacted quite so well, with many of them asking for the show to finish now that Nina is out.

Incensed and saddened by her news, one fan wrote on Twitter: 'Nina Dobrev is officially leaving the vampire diaries lol seriously what is TVD without her????'

Another added: 'So I was still hoping that Stefan & Elena would get back together then Nina Dobrev decides to leave the show??? Uhm GUUUUURL!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

One asked for the show to finish thanks to her departure: 'If Nina Dobrev is leaving TVD they may aswell (sic) end the series. As much as I love it, 6 seasons will do.'

Nina portrayed the main protagonist in The Vampire Diaries as her character Elena was loved by two vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore.

The Bulgaria native dated her The Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder for three years before they split in May 2013.
