'We still live in a very sexist society': Madonna, 56, poses in lacy lingerie as she talks women's rights in Cosmopolitan's 50th anniversary issue

No one can accuse Madonna of not having lasting power.

The blonde bombshell made the 25th anniversary cover of Cosmopolitan in 1990, and now the 56-year-old singer is back for the monthly's 50th anniversary issue.

Provocative as always, Madonna insisted: 'We still live in a very sexist society that wants to limit people.'

'Don't be fooled, not much has changed, certainly not for women,' the mother of four explained.

Madonna has not changed much either, looking sexy as she bit down on a pearl necklace for one of the Cosmopolitan covers.

Four different covers - all examples of the Material Girl's enduring sex appeal - were chosen for the special issue meant to 'celebrate 50 years of power, provocation, and living that Cosmo-girl life.'

The Rebel Heart singer also talked to Cosmo about her long career, recent collaborations, and the changes she has seen over the past 30 years as a superstar.

To begin with, Madonna spoke candidly about her longevity and what that has meant for her image.

'Popularity comes and goes,' she explained in the interview.

'You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and why you're here.'

While the singer has known more popularity than almost anyone, even she hasn't been immune to criticism, especially with advancing age.

'Since I started, I've had people giving me a hard time because they didn't think you could be sexual or have sexuality or sensuality in your work and be intelligent at the same time.'

Work it in a short-sleeve sweater like Madonna

She's known for her racy performances and risque costumes, so Madonna is the perfect cover girl for Cosmopolitan's 50th Anniversary Issue. The Like a Virgin singer stayed true to form posing in lacy lingerie and skimpy attire like this look by N°21.

The short sleeved sweater is an excellent piece to transition from Winter to Spring and the crystal brooch adds a bit of pizzaz to a plain color palette. We adore the top paired with the floral embroidered shorts, but it would look just as snazzy if teamed with a white A-line skirt and flatform shoes.

Nab Madge's pretty pullover at Farfetch. Or try one of the substitutes in the carousel from J. Crew or Steven Alan that work just as well and cost a whole lot less. However, if you've got money to burn, the Marni number, with its jeweled neckline, is at the top of our list.

'For me, the fight has never ended,' Madonna - who released Rebel Heart, her 13th studio album in March - added.

When talking of that most recent album, Madonna came to the subject of Kanye West, one of her several collaborators on the work.

'It's a little bit of a bullfight, but we take turns,' she admitted. 'He knows that he's walking into a room with a person with a strong point of view, and I do too.'

'We didn't agree on everything, but he has good ideas.'

In the end, Madonna went back to the issue of criticism and how it has grown in many ways with the rise of the Internet.

'You can hide behind your computer or your phone and say whatever you want,' she told Cosmopolitan.

'Could you say it to my face? Would you say it to my face? I doubt it,' Madonna concluded.

Whatever the Internet thinks, Madonna has not slowed down: The mother of four will embark on a world tour to promote Rebel Heart in August.
