It's a time to rejoice in Denmark as the country celebrates the upcoming 75th birthday of Queen Margrethe II.

And Crown Princess Mary was dressed to impress for the special occasion of her mother-in-law's milestone, looking classic in cream as she stepped out in Aarhus, Denmark on Wednesday.

The Australian-born Danish royal gave her signature warm smile as she waved at the crowds that had gathered to catch a glimpse of Mary and husband Frederik, the Crown Prince, as they arrived at a luncheon reception.

The 43-year-old wore a cream, knee-length dress cinched at the waist with a thin black belt.

She accessorised with black pump heels, some stylish millinery atop her head and carried a clutch in her hands.

A simple grey wool coat hung over her shoulders, providing some much-needed warmth in the crisp weather.

Formalities: They were welcomed by Aarhus Mayor Jacob Bundsgaard at the city's Town Hall for the event

Prince Frederik also looked smart, donning a navy suit and red tie for the occasion.

The beloved couple, who married in 2004 and have four children, joined their family members on the balcony of City Hall to wave at the crowds gathered below.

Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, Prince Consort Henrik and of course Queen Margrethe stood proudly alongside Mary and Frederik as they took in the view from up high before heading inside.

Princess Mary, formerly Mary Donaldson, met her Danish beau in Sydney during the 2000 OIympics.

The pair famously met at iconic Sydney pub, The Slip Inn.

The story of a Tasmanian-born woman falling in love with a prince and becoming a member of the Danish royal family has become something of a fairytale story in her home country.
