Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley were back on the Snowden set Thursday, but with a slight difference.

The stars were sporting slightly more mature hairstyles for the day as they filmed scenes for the political thriller, about the real life of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, in Washington.

Shailene's hair was shorter and perfectly coiffed while Joseph's barnet had been swept to the side as though these scenes take place at a later time in Snowden's life-changing story.

The 34-year-old Emmy winner plays the NSA whistle blower while 23-year-old Woodley has been cast as his girlfriend Lindsay Mills.

The set up saw the stars wearing casual clothes and walking out of a house though it's unclear just where the scene will fit in the overarching narrative.

A day earlier, the actors were spotted sharing a kiss and much more youthful looks.

The pair looked like any unassuming couple as they strolled around the capital.

Joseph wore old trainers, loose jeans, a light plaid shirt with a grey anorak and backpack, while Shailene had on plimsolls, jeans and a black short leather jacket over a sleeveless red blouse.

Her wig was longer and less styled than the one she wore for filming on Thursday.

Three-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone is helming the biopic which also stats Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, and Timothy Olyphant.

Joseph has already shot scenes as a US Army Reserve, detailing Snowden's brief basic training at Fort Benning in 2004.

'I'm just honored and excited to be doing a soldier sequence with Oliver. I keep saying to myself: "F***, this guy directed Platoon!"...I feel so sincerely privileged that he asked me to play this part.'
