David Spade reprises his role as the mulleted antihero, while Christopher Walken and Sweet Valley High star Brittany Daniel also return.

'Joe "Keeps on keepin' on",' 50-year-old Spade told Entertainment Weekly. 'He's married now and doing his best, but things don't all go perfectly for him, as usual. Like he says in the movie, when he gets a setback, "I just keep getting stupider".

Despite the original generally being panned by critics - it has a 'fresh' rating of just 11% on Rotten Tomatoes - the film managed to almost double its $17million budget at the box office and has something of a cult following.

'I've always liked the movie a lot,' Spade said, explaining why he came back to the character after 14 years. 'But I also go by feedback from people I see or on Twitter and Instagram.

'Besides Tommy Boy, this is the most talked-about movie for me. After ten years of people still asking about a sequel, we finally found a good way to do it. Joe is a fun character to play. I'm stoked for everyone to see it.'

The film will be released on the free streaming service Crackle, which is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, making it the 'first ever made-for-digital sequel', and is being produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison.

In the spoof dramatic trailer, as the tagline 'Throughout history, legends are forgotten - but this summer one legend will keep on keepin' on,' plays out, the mystery figure in front of a billowing American flag turns to reveal Spade as Joe, still wearing the mullet he had attached to his malformed skull as a baby.

According to IMDb, this time round Joe Dirt 'travels back in time and becomes rich because he knows the future.'

New additions to the sequel's cast include Patrick Warburton and Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath.
