Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 - 12 April 2015

Solar activity was at low to moderate levels throughout the period. Region 2320 (S12, L=211, class/area=Dac/180 on 07 Apr) produced an M1/1b flare at 1443 UTC on 08 April and Region 2321 (N13, L=094, class/area=Ekc/610 on 12 Apr) produced a long-duration M1/Sf flare at 0950 UTC on 12 April, which were the largest events of the period. In addition to the R1 (Minor) radio blackouts, Regions 2320 and 2321 produced numerous low to mid-level C-class flares throughout the week and were the most productive active regions of the period. A coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the M1/Sf flare from Region 2321 was first observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 coronagraph imagery at 0948 UTC on 12 April, but was directed well east of the Sun-Earth line.

Region 2320 produced a C3/1f flare at 1906 UTC on 06 April, with associated Type-II and Type-IV radio emissions, which resulted in a CME that was visible in coronagraph imagery beginning at 1936 UTC on 06 April. This CME impacted Earth early on 10 April, causing periods of moderate geomagnetic storms. See "Geomag" portion below for further information.

Toward the end of the period, Region 2320 produced a C6/Sf flare at 2329 UTC on 12 April with associated Type-II radio emissions. A subsequent coronal mass ejection (CME) was first visible in
SOHO/LASCO C2 coronagraph imagery at 12/2348 UTC but analysis is ongoing to determine if this event has an Earth-directed component. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached moderate levels on 06-09 April and at normal levels for the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to unsettled levels for 06-09 April under a nominal solar wind regime. The 06 April CME impacted Earth just after 0000 UTC on 10 April, enhancing the geomagnetic field. As the 06 April CME passed the Earth, 10 April began with periods of G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm conditions between 0000-0300 UTC and 0600-0900 UTC and an isolated period of G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm period between 10/0300-0600 UTC. Active conditions were observed between 10/0900-1500 UTC with quiet to unsettled levels observed over the remainder of 10 April. Active conditions were observed once again for the first half of 11 April as residual CME effects continued to subside but the latter half of 11 April was quiet to unsettled. Quiet conditions were observed on 12 April.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 April - 09 May 2015

Solar activity is likely to be at moderate (R1-R2/Minor-Moderate) levels throughout the period, with the exception of 25-26 April, due to the flare potential of Regions 2320 (S12, L=211) and 2321 (N13,
L=094).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit, barring any significant flare activity.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 21-24 April and 04-09 May, moderate levels on 17-20, 25-28 April, and 01-03 May, and normal levels for the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 17 and 30 April with active conditions expected for 16, 25, 29 April and 01 May, all due to coronal hole
high speed stream effects. Quiet to unsettled field activity expected for the remainder of the period.

Domestic Broadcasting Survey # 17 now available

Press Release

THE  DANISH SHORTWAVE  CLUB  INTERNATIONAL (DSWCI)
www.dswci.org

New Survey Available

The Domestic Broadcasting Survey 17  (DBS-17), April 2015
edited by DSWCI Chairman, Anker Petersen. ISSN 1399-8218

The 58 years old DSWCI which counts experienced DX-ers in 34 countries all over the world as members, has just issued the 17th  Edition of its annual Domestic Broadcasting Survey. This survey is divided into three parts:

Part 1: The 43rd  edition of the Tropical Bands Survey covering all ACTIVE broadcasting stations on 2300 - 5700 kHz, including clandestines.

Part 2: Domestic stations on international shortwave bands above 5700 kHz broadcasting to a domestic audience.

Part 3: Deleted frequencies between 2 and 30 MHz which have not been reported heard during the past five years, but may reappear.

This new Survey is based upon monitoring by our members, many official sources and DX-bulletins. A15 schedules are included when available. In order to make the DBS reliable, our own monitors around the world have checked throughout the period April 2014 – March 2015, if each of the 530 station frequencies is on the air.  ACTIVE stations are marked with an A (”Regular”), B (”Irregular”) or C (”Sporadic”) in the list.   D means ”Likely inactive”.

A unique feature is the right column called ”Last log”. It shows the last month and year before DBS deadline on March 31, 2015   when the particular station was reported logged by a DX-er somewhere in the world. This is another way of indicating the current audibility of the station. To avoid inactive stations in this DBS, most frequencies which have not been heard during the past year, have been deleted and are moved to Part 3. No other frequency list has this feature!

Other useful features for easy identification (ID) are the parallel frequencies and reference to Station ID slogans.

Three sample extracts from the DBS-17 are shown on the next page. Reviews can be found on www.dswci.org

All buyers of DBS-17 will get a username and password to the monthly updates on the tropical bands published as "Tropical Bands Monitor" on our website. The similar, historical data from 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 are available to anybody at  www.dswci.org/tbm .

The 20 pages A-4 size DBS-17 is available by e-mail as pdf-format (about 350 kB). A limited number is also available printed on paper.

International Callsign Handbook e-book now available at Amazon

Ask any radio monitor what information they consider important during any monitoring session, and usually two items will top their list: frequencies and call signs. If you can hear activity on a particular frequency, unless you can fully identify the participants transmitting on that frequency, you can’t fully appreciate or document the traffic you are hearing.
With millions of radio stations furnishing a variety of communication services throughout the world, it is necessary that their transmissions carry distinctive call signs or identifiers. Call signs have a four-fold purpose: They may identify the nationality of the station, the agency operating a particular station, the type of station, and the identity of each individual station being heard on the monitored frequency.

The need for station identifications/call signs can easily be illustrated here in the United States, which leads all other countries in the use of the radio spectrum, that now has some 85 different kinds of radio services operated by the government, military and civilians entities, providing air, sea, land and space communication services. There are hundreds of thousands of stations on the air and call signs and other forms of identification help the radio monitor sort through the various stations that are heard.

A call sign is defined as any combination of alphanumeric characters or phonetically pronounceable characters (trigraph), which identifies a communications facility, a command, an authority, an activity or unit. To aid the radio monitor in their listening endeavors, the International Call Sign Handbook series of books/e-books has been published.
Teak Publishing is pleased to announce their latest Kindle e-book -- the fourth edition of International Call Sign Handbook. This e-book represents the most comprehensive collection of military and government station identifications ever published for the radio listening hobby. It is the result of year’s research, study and monitoring the HF/VHF/UHF radio spectrum, by the author. Many different radio monitoring disciplines have been used to compile the listings in this book. If you monitor the HF, VHF or UHF radio spectrum, there is something in this book for you.

The information presented in this book has also been gathered through personal correspondence, material published in the former Monitoring Times magazine, various radio publications, newsletters, public domain government and private internet web sites, but most have been gathered the old fashioned way via on-the-air monitoring. In addition, we have received generous support and contributions from many individuals in the radio hobby.

In addition to international and military/government tactical call signs, other types of identifiers such as Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) and Mode-S aircraft addresses have been included in this e-book. There is a chapter that had basic introductory material, as well as chapters devoted to call sign / words used by the Department of Defense including the US. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. There are sections that cover the various Military Auxiliary Radio Services and the U.S. Air Force Civil Air Patrol auxiliary service.
There is also a chapter that covers call signs and ALE identifiers for the U.S. Coast Guard service. Sections in that chapter include a Coast Guard aircraft fleet list, miscellaneous U.S. coast guard calls, and also their international call signs.

Another large chapter covers various U.S. Government call signs. Sections in this chapter include the U.S. Custom and Border Patrol COTHEN radio system and ALE address list, plus call signs from the following department and agencies - Department of Commerce (DOC), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of the Interior (DOI), Department of the Interior (DOI) Bureau of Indian Affairs, Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of State, Department of Transportation, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Federal Communications Commission, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), General Services Administration (GSA), Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD), Miscellaneous Listings, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Communications System (NCS), and U.S. Marshal Service (USMS) service.

One of the larger chapters is devoted to an international / worldwide call signs list. We have a sampling of government and military call signs from 75 counties and international agencies.

The latest craze in aircraft military is decoding Mode-S/ICAO24 radio signals and is included in this book. Our list in this edition covers primarily government / military aircraft and introductory material on Mode-S monitoring.
The last chapter of this book contains a large list of resource information, useful in interpreting the individual entries listed in the book. Sections on U.S. Navy ship/squadron classifications; U.S. Coast Guard cutter designators; a massive list of abbreviations and acronyms that appear in the book; a comprehensive country abbreviation list; and the latest Table of Allocations of International Call signs from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) are included in the last chapter on the e-book.

The Teak Publishing 4th International Call Sign Handbook is now available for purchase worldwide from Amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VV7NR1U. The price for this e-Book edition is US$6.99. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 March - 05 April 2015

Solar activity was at low levels throughout the period. Region 2303 (N19, L=066, class/area=Hkx/400 on 17 Mar) produced low to mid-level C-class activity early in the period while Regions 2318 (N10, L=199, class/area=Dao/199 on 05 Apr) and 2320 (S12, L=212, class/area=Dai/140 on 05 Apr) each produced only low-level C-class flare activity throughout the remainder of the period.

A filament eruption centered near S29E28 was observed in SDO/AIA 193 imagery between 04/2225-2330 UTC. A long-duration C3/1f hyderflare was measured during this event and had an associated Type-II radio emission. The subsequent fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME) was first observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 coronagraph imagery beginning at 04/2336 UTC. WSA-ENLIL model output suggests a glancing blow arrival of this CME late on 07 April.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels on 30 Mar and normal to moderate levels on 31 Mar-05 Apr.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to unsettled levels on 02-04 Apr with an isolated period of active conditions observed between 2100-2359 UTC on 02 Apr due to the effects of a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 30 Mar-01 Apr, and 05 Apr under a mostly nominal solar wind environment.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 April - 02 May 2015

Solar activity is expected to be low (below NOAA Scale event thresholds) with a slight chance for M-class (R1-Minor) flare activity throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 22-24 Apr and 02 May, moderate levels on 06-08, 11-14, 17, 20-21 Apr, and 27 Apr-01 May, and at normal levels for the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 15-16, 18-19, and 25-27 Apr due to coronal hole high speed stream effects. Active conditions are expected on 07-09 Apr due to the anticipated arrival of the 04/05 Apr CME. Active conditions are expected on 17, 20 Apr, and 28 Apr-01 May due to coronal hole high speed stream effects with generally quiet to unsettled levels likely for the remainder of the period.

Free Radio Service Holland Easter programming

All 'Latest News' items appear after clicking below the 'FRS on air April 5th' article !

Easter Sunday broadcast on shortwave
Easter Sunday April 5th FRS-Holland will take to the airwaves. Programs will begin at 10:00 UTC/ 11:00 BST/ 12:00 CEST and last till 15:00 UTC/ 16:00 BST/ 17:00 CEST.

Frequencies are: 7700//9335 kHz and 6070 kHz. After close down FRS intends to continue repeating a few shows on 7700//9335 kHz.

Streaming
Choosing for ‘the best of both worlds’ FRSH goes for broadcasting on short wave in good old AM and digital high quality web streaming. We were approached by the responsible person from the German radio website fmkompakt.de/. He has offered to take care of FRS streaming during future broadcasting days. That means that listeners can make their choice out of two possibilities: http://laut.fm/jukebox and 'good old' http://nednl.net:8000/frsh.m3u

On Easter Sunday April 5th streaming will be done between 15:00- 20:00 UTC/ 17:00-22:00 CEST. Choose for one of the afore mentioned options.  As an 'extra' there will also be streaming via http://laut.fm/jukebox on Easter Monday April 6th between 10:00- 15:00 UTC/ 12:00- 17:00 CEST.

QSL cards
For this broadcast we feature the 8th (!) of the ‘FRS Through the Years’ QSL Series. This successful series will be continued in 2015. A hard copy QSL can be achieved by writing to our Herten maildrop. It's a high quality large size colour QSL which certainly is desirable... E-mails will be consequently replied with our e-QSL card.

Our usual format of 'a Balance between music and information' means....great (often forgotten) music, DX news, the Phrase that Pays, Archive sound bytes, offshore and land based pirate radio items, Uplink, your mail from December 28th 2014, the Day Calendar and...just tune our way and find out!!

VOA Radiogram weekend programming

Hello friends,

The Saturday 0930-1000 broadcast of VOA Radiogram returns to 5745 kHz as of this weekend (4 April).

Yes, there were some breaks in transmission at the beginning of last week's transmission Sunday at 1930 UTC on 15670 kHz. It was not your receiver, computer, or software.

Last week's test of the 8PSK FEC modes was interesting. In general, the 8PSK FEC modes did not perform as well as well as the MFSK modes. However, Richard in New Brunswick and I, using a receiver in Nova Scotia, had 100% copy of all the modes, including 8PSKR250F at 635 wpm! This mode might be useful for high-speed data transmission, including formatted web pages, over distances of 1500 km or less, especially when propagation is stable.

This weekend we will do one more test of 8PSK125F. This will actually be two transmissions, one without the pilot tone, and one with the pilot tone. You do not need to make any adjustments to  detect the pilot tone, other than to have the Fldigi RxID on (green). "The RsID signal will both determine the mode and the mode center frequency (to the nearest 2.6 Hz). A finer resolution of the mode center frequency can be made using the optional pilot carrier," according to the Fldigi Users Manual.

Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 105, 4-5 April 2015, all in MFSK32 except where indicated ...

 1:27  Program preview
2:46  Russia Denies License to Tatar-Language TV*
 8:53  8PSK125F: Tatar-language TV channels off air
10:03  8PSK125F (with pilot tone): Same story
11:08  MFSK32 resumes: Cyberattack targets GitHub*
16:39  Google and Chinese website certificates*
21:18  Cuba will increase Internet access*
27:10  Closing announcements
28:35  Bonus mode: Olivia 16-1000

Please send reception reports to radiogram@voanews.com .

VOA Radiogram transmission schedule
(all days and times UTC):

All via the Edward R. Murrow transmitting station in North Carolina.

The Mighty KBC will transmit a minute of MFSK64 Sunday at 0130 UTC (Saturday at 9:30 pm EDT) on 7375 kHz (via Germany). This is part of the expanded KBC transmission UTC Sundays at 0000-0300 UTC on 7375 kHz. The Saturday transmission of The Mighty KBC on 6095 kHz is discontinued.  Reports to Eric at themightykbc@gmail.com .

WRMI, Radio Miami International, 9955 kHz, will transmit IDs in digital modes again this weekend. You might not hear these transmissions, or even see a trace of the digital modes on your waterfall, but you might still successfully decode the text. Reports to Jeff at info@wrmi.net .

AndFlmsg (Fldigi for Android). If you have an Android tablet or phone, a new beta release (B0.5.0) of AndFlmsg  is now available at  http://www.w1hkj.com/vk2eta/ . This new version can decode MFSK images and has other improvements. Please let me know your results. (This tip from the developer: On the modem screen, to copy and paste part of the decoded text, simply stop the modem with the Modem On/Off button, then long-press on the received text to show the select/copy tool. The text can then be pasted into an email app for example.) (AndFlmsg B0.5.0 may not yet have the 8PSK125F mode.)

Thank you for your helpful reports from last weekend's broadcast (program 104). I will compile the gallery of MFSK images and answer those reports as soon as I can.
