Breaking Bad director Michelle MacLaren leaves Wonder Woman movie over 'creative differences'

She was set to become the first woman to direct a Hollywood superhero movie but on Monday came word that Michelle MacLaren is out as director of the upcoming Wonder Woman film.

MacLaren who has cut her teeth on Breaking Bad and Game Of Thrones was hired in November to help develop and helm the Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment production that will star Gal Gadot in the title role.

But The Hollywood Reporter said Monday that  'creative differences' got in the way.

It's not known what exactly were the sticking points in the development of the film that led MacLaren to drop out.

It would have given her her first big screen outing and would have broken one of the industry's glass ceilings by proving that a woman can take on a lucrative superhero franchise.

It's not clear what her departure means for the movie that's in pre-production and in the middle of casting a male lead to play Wonder Woman's love interest  Steve Trevor.

According to Variety,  test offers were set to go out to four actors on Monday.

MacLaren was seen as a popular choice initially to take on the project given her hugely admired work on AMC's Breaking Bad and HBO's Game Of Thrones.

She had also recently directed an episode of the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul.

Wonder Woman was slated for a 2017 release as part of the slew on comic book movies being shot in tandem with characters moving between individual films.

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman will first appear on the big screen in next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill.

THR points out that MacLaren's departure has echoes of an incident in 2011 when another female director Patty Jenkins, who'd been hired for the Marvel sequel Thor 2, was let go from the project.

It was reported at the time that when Jenkins, who directed Charlize Theron in Monster, and Marvel hit an impasse, the movie was turned over to Game Of Thrones director Alan Taylor.

Monday's announcement about MacLaren is, the THR says, 'sure to raise the question of whether women filmmakers are welcome in the world of high-stakes, superhero movies'.
