If they are back together, Katy Perry doesn't appear to be in New York with John Mayer.

The 37-year-old left the luxury Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan solo on Tuesday night.

The singer-songwriter looked lost his own thoughts as he stepped out through the gilt revolving doors amid rumours he is back with his pop star ex.

Wearing a pair of faded jeans with tan suede shoes, Mayer finished his casual outfit with a dark grey sweatshirt and leather jacket.

Possibly on his mind is is his on-again-off-again-on-again-off-again girlfriend Katy Perry.

The two were spotted in the new West Hollywood hot spot Ysabel two weeks ago, where according to witnesses they looked 'very much like a couple'.

The 19-year-old Instagramed a picture of the two standing together last week with the caption: 'when you meet your favorite musician ever: @johnmayer, great show @ hotel cafe even though I had to watch through the cracks of the door since I'm not 21.'
