The title comes from the symbolism of water representing the spiritual connection Joshua shares with his three boys and his grief-stricken wife.

Determined to bring his son's bodies home, Joshua travels to Constantinople (now Istanbul) in Turkey, and stays at a hotel managed by a beautiful and mysterious woman named Ayshe, who is played by actress Olga Kurylenko.

He then tries to find a way to Gallipoli, where the battle he lost his boys in took place.
