TONY HETHERINGTON: £29,950 for 'fishing village' land ... but there's a big catch

Ms J.V. writes: In 2011 I was persuaded to buy a plot of land in Brazil, followed by a larger plot a few weeks later. The salesman was a silver-tongued broker named Jacob Stone from Land Asset Group, aided by another broker, William Lord. I had regular calls telling me all was fine, with the World Cup on its way, followed by the Olympic Games. But in 2012 I tried to call the company and its number was unobtainable. I did eventually make contact, but was told Stone was away in Brazil. Now I want to sell my land to help family members who have had a bad time recently, but BT says the company's number has been 'disabled', and a recorded delivery letter has been ignored.

SIMON LAMBERT: Don't expect buy-to-let's interstellar gains to be repeated - 1996 was a much better time to invest in property than today

Astonishing claims of a 1,400% return over the past two decades are built on borrowed money but there's another important point to consider - property was unloved and cheap in 1996. That made buy-to-let a turbocharged value investment. Investors could still do well today, but they shouldn't expect a repeat of the past.

But a Hargreaves Lansdown commentator says the UK stock market is 'packed to the rafters' with global companies, for which the election is a parochial issue and in the long term company profits are not in thrall to any political party.

Best paid UK jobs 2014: Compare your pay to the national average in the league table of salaries across 350 trades and professions

The influence of financial services on the economy is spelled out again as City brokers steal top spot in this year's official list of highest earners. According to the detailed 2014 annual salaries survey, brokers pocketed around 40 times more this year than those at the bottom of the list - the people responsible for keeping children safe on the way to school. Lollipop crossing patrols earned around £3,400.
