The book has been written following a long interest in the vernacular architecture and buildings of Stroud and Chalford. It contains information on the development of the settlements and their relationship with each other and with the local cloth industry. Many individual buildings are described, together with information about their development over the centuries, as shown by the evidence remaining in their structures. A method for analysing buildings is described and has been applied in the discussion of the buildings in the text. It contains about 900 photographs of local cottages, houses and mills, mainly taken over the last 30 years and is a unique record of the rich architectural history of the Stroud area. Advice is given to owners on how to look after their buildings, with the aim of encouraging the retention of the historic character of the buildings. It also contains a review of activities of different groups in Stroud to halt the demolition of historic buildings over the past 30 years and what has been achieved by these actions.

Four years in the making, this book is a testimony to the splendid taste and exquisite design of these Egyptian homes. Opulent or minimalist, traditional or contemporary, they are all as diverse in style and distinct in personality as their owners are and reflect a tasteful and clever blend of oriental and european styles, showing traditional Islamic or coptic art often mixed with Pharaonic, Ottoman or Napoleonic designs.

This resource guide aims to assemble within one volume brief details of all the surviving buildings in England and Wales as well as smaller artifacts which may be described collectively as contents. The guide is targeted both at researchers from a variety of disciplines - historical, archaeological and architectural etc. - as well as at individual heritage enthusiasts who wish to track down items of particular interest. It is also hoped that it will become a standard of reference in libraries. About 580 monastic houses are referred to in the text, the author having visited almost all of them over a period of fifteen years. As far as the author is aware, no comprehensive effort has been made to bring this data together within one book. The work seeks therefore to fill a significant information gap.
