I bought this book in November, 1977. I loved it! It had spa recipes, makeovers, and how-to's that really worked.
I like the way the book's laid out (in 3 parts). The first part gives you some of Ms. Arpel's background. It's not boring stuff. It's actually fun and interesting to read.
The second section is called "The Comprehensive Mini-Encyclopedia of Beauty" and that's exactly what it is. Each chapter focuses on something different. ie:
Chapter 1 - The Truth about skin (and its care)
Chapter 2 - The Truth about hair (and its care)
Chapter 3 - The Truth about exercise
Chapter 4 - The Truth about dieting
Chapter 5 - The Truth about sun
Chapter 6 - The Truth about hair color (and its care)
Chapter 7 - The Truth about hands and nails
Chapter 8 - The Truth about feet (and its care)
Chapter 9 - The Truth about Intimate Beauty Rituals
Chapter 10- The Truth about Plastic Surgery
The information in these chapters is good and still timely. She knew her stuff then and she knows it now.
Finally, the third section is the actual makeover/shapeover plan and it's fun, informative and really DOES make you not only feel good but look good!

There's no denying that Adrien Arpel knows her stuff, and this book demonstrates her knowledge. Granted, the information about cosmetic surgery is a little dated, as well as the styles in the before and after pictures. However, 90% of the tips and techniques in the book can still be used today.

The book contains a plethora of spa recipes using ingredients that you can readily buy in your grocery store or beauty supply shop. Besides providing the recipes, she also gives step-by-step directions on how to apply the treatments correctly.

One thing that I like about the book is she talks about the kook diets and gently discourages readers from following them by explaining the pros and cons of the diets, including stinky breath! She provides a well-balanced diet to follow for the three weeks *only* to help get rid of those last 10 pounds as well as some sensible exercises, although jogging may be a little hard for someone with bad knees.

What separates this book from other beauty books is she gives you a Health class 101 explanation on your skin, hair and nails. I think that this knowledge is helpful to explain why the ingredients in the treatments help the particular area.

Even though the cosmetic surgery information is dated (the book is over 30 years old and cosmetic surgery has changed), she does write an honest discussion about it. She doesn't make the reader feel guilty for wanting to get the procedures, yet she explains all the risks that are involved in those procedures so someone interested in a procedure can make an informed decision.

Besides being informative, Ms. Arpel's writing is FUN. When I was reading her book, I felt like I was being spoken to by a stylish, friendly mother or friend. I really enjoyed reading it.

So happy I found this, it is a replacement for my old, tattered, copy of Adrien's 3 week Makeover/Shapeover Program. My go to book for keeping in shape, looking good, and pampering myself, for nearly 35 years now.

I had this book back in the 80's and loved a lot of the info, especially the facials. Was happy to find it again.
