He is one of Australia's biggest acting exports, and now Joel Edgerton is preparing for the release of his directorial debut The Gift.

The trailer for the film was released this month and shows the actor playing a creepy loner with a dark past.

Also starring Arrested Development's Jason Bateman and Vicky Cristina Barcelona's Rebecca Hall, the film centres on newlywed couple Simon (Bateman) and Robyn (Hall) whose lives are turned upside down when they run into an old friend of Simon's called Gordo (Edgerton).

Gordo and the couple appear to get along well at first, but Simon soon realises his 'friend' has a dark side after he continues to mysteriously show up to the pair's house unannounced and randomly leaves generous and expensive gifts.

When the first mysterious gift arrives on Simon and Robyn's door step she asks: 'How do you think he got our address?' before adding: 'That’s an expensive bottle of wine, we should thank him.'

The trio have dinner together, but it is clear that Simon feels somewhat uncomfortable by Gordo, who says odd things such as: 'I believe that the bad things in life, they can be a gift.'

Generous: Gordo begins to make Simon and his wife Robyn (played by Rebecca Hall) uncomfortable as he begins giving the couple generous gifts and leaving them on their doorstep

'Delusional': Simon tells Robyn: 'He’s delusional, thinks we’re friends,' and adds: 'They used to call him Gordo the Weirdo'

The gifts continue to show up at the couple's house unannounced, and soon so does Gordo while Robyn is home alone.

'He’s delusional, thinks we’re friends,' Simon tells Robyn and adds: 'They used to call him Gordo the Weirdo.'

Having had enough of the unannounced visits Simon simply tells Gordo not to visit them anymore, but when the mysterious gifts continue to show up as it seems Gordo knows something about Simon's past that he would not want uncovered.

Gordo sends Simon a DVD with a voice over that can be heard saying: 'You think you’re done with the past, but the past is not done with you,' as Simon watches the video while crying.

Jason joked as he tweeted about the film earlier this month: 'Maybe this is why I've never been to a high school reunion.'

As part of the marketing campaign for the film, a Twitter account has been set up with the handle @YourFriendGordo, where creepy tweets are sent.

Some of the freaky tweets include: 'Can't wait to drop off this gift for my old friend,' as well as: 'I was really hoping we could put this all behind us. I guess not...'

The Gift will be released on July 31 in the United States.

Innocent? It starts out innocently enough with a bottle of wine, but the couple had not told Gordo where they lived, making the delivery a little creepy

Hospital visit: At one point in the film Robyn ends up in hospital, but it's not known if it is due to an accident or whether she was just giving birth
