Gladiator no more! Russell Crowe reveals fuller frame during interview with Jimmy Fallon as the pair perform a duet together

He made his name starring as the extremely buff Roman general Maximus in Gladiator in 2000.

But these days Russell Crowe is a little more relaxed.

The Hollywood heavyweight, 51, sported a slightly fuller figure as he arrived at the Jimmy Fallon show in New York on Tuesday.

Opting for an all-black ensemble, Russell wore a black shirt layered with a matching blazer as he sat down to chat intimately with the US talk show host.

A pair of dark trousers and complementing tie added some sharp touches to his look, his outfit completed with a pair of shiny black shoes.

With his wavy locks and lighter grey facial hair, the star seemed to be in high spirits for the television appearance.

As well as being a stellar actor, the New Zealand born star is known to have belted out some tunes in his day - and that is exactly what the father-of-two did during the show.

Both Russell and 40-year-old Jimmy strummed away on a guitar each while singing a protest song about tarballs, Balls In Your Mouth, in honour of Earth Day and the five year anniversary of the BP Oil Spill.

Russell has been busy promoting his film The Water Diviner, which is his directorial debut.

He also stars as Joshua Connor in the movie, which tells the tale of a man who is coming to terms with the possibility his sons, who have gone missing in the Great War, are dead.

The title comes from the symbolism of water representing the spiritual connection Joshua shares with his three boys and his grief-stricken wife.

Determined to bring his son's bodies home, Joshua travels to Constantinople (now Istanbul) in Turkey, and stays at a hotel managed by a beautiful and mysterious woman named Ayshe, who is played by actress Olga Kurylenko.

He then tries to find a way to Gallipoli, where the battle he lost his boys in took place.

Ryan Corr plays one of his sons in the film with Jai Courtney, another Australian actor also starring.

Russell's directorial debut has been a huge hit - he took out a gong at the G'Day USA awards in February, as well as winning joint best film at The AACTA Awards.

The Water Diviner also became the highest grossing film in Australia in 2014 after just six days.

It raked in $5.68 million following its Boxing Day release.
