Unlikely BFFs! Julia Roberts, 47, puts her arm around director Jodie Foster, 52, on the NYC set of their new film Money Monster

These Oscar winners used to compete with each other for the best roles in Hollywood movies throughout the 1990s.

So it's nice to see that these days Julia Roberts, 47, and Jodie Foster, 52, have become close friends.

While working together Wednesday on the New York City set of Money Monster - Roberts is the star and Jodie is the director - the two acted like besties as they talked closely and put their arms around each other when walking down the street during a break from filming

Also starring in the thriller are George Clooney, Caitriona Balfe and Jack O’Connell, who were not seen on set.

Foster seemed to be directing Roberts in a scene taking place in midtown section of Manhattan.

Julia looked very dressed down for her role as Patty Fenn, the director and executive producer of the financial program Money Monster.

Not only were her red dyed locks pulled back into a lazy ponytail, but she wore an unflattering outfit that consisted of a green parka jacket over a vinyl bubble jacket with black slacks and masculine-looking black shoes.

Foster was even more dressed down in a longer black parka coat and a zip up sweatshirt,

Neither A-lister seemed to be wearing much makeup.

It's nice to see that the two have gotten close, not just because they were once competitors but because they are both known to have intense personalities.

But there they were, having a grand time during their lunch break.

At one point the Pretty Woman star touched Jodie's shoulder as she leaned in to tell her something.

Later the mother of three put her arm around the Silence Of The Lambs actress as they passed people in business suits.

In the scene Julia is acting very fierce as she yells out the window of a van stamped FNN - Financial News Network to a man.

Inside the van is a full TV producer's unit with screens and computers.

But when Jodie approaches the vehicle to talk to the wife of Danny Moder, she is smiling from ear to ear.

The film focuses on the plight of financial TV personality Lee Gates, played by George Clooney, who offers up stock advice on his hit show Money Monster.

Gates is held hostage by a viewer, Kyle Budwell, who lost all of his money by following a bad tip from Lee during his show.

Julia and George play lovers in the movie. They also played lovers in the Ocean's Eleven films.

It's been a busy work year for Julia.

Last month she was seen shooting The Secrets In Their Eyes with Nicole Kidman and Michael Kelly with director Billy Ray.
