'It really does sound like that!' Rose Byrne does hilarious impression of Australia's laughing kookaburra bird on Tonight Show

She left her family Down Under for a life in the US during the height of her acting career.

But Rose Byrne's roots are still very much a part of her, given her impression of the kookaburra, a bird native to Australia, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old actress mimicked the creature's call, which sounds like an echoing human laughter, as she pursed her lips together, blew out through her mouth and let out an interesting screech.

She began: 'There's a bird in Australia called the kookaburra, which is a very beautiful native bird, and it makes a really interesting sound , which I'll try and do...'

Turning slight red in the face, the brunette beauty carried out the impression for a seven seconds, before Jimmy, 43, and the audience burst into a fit of giggles and praised her on the example.

She added: 'It really does sound like that. I'm not making it up. It's even louder than that. It's a really crazy sound. I'm so used to it, so you wake up and you hear it and it's usually when you're in the country and stuff, not in the city so much.'

Meanwhile, the Balmain-born beauty credits her upbringing in New South Wales for her relaxed personality and believes her chilled-out vibe has been beneficial to her in the acting industry.

She told the Daily Telegraph in January: 'My family are very down to earth, they’re quintessentially Australian in that way, in that they don’t take themselves too seriously, so I think that is probably a quality that I still have. I take the work seriously but I don’t take myself too seriously.'

'That is generally an Australian quality and it is something that is very refreshing, especially in this business that can be very heady, and it is a tough thing to navigate sometimes, ' she added.

Rose now lives in New York with her boyfriend Bobby Cannavale, whom she has been dating for over two years, but she certainly misses her home country and her tight-knit family.

But she gets through the homesickness by making sure her cupboards at home are stocked up with Vegemite, which is an Australian paste made from leftover brewer's yeast extract.

She said: 'Vegemite is expensive over there [US], a small tub is $8.50, but it is my comfort food. When I was doing the play, I’d come home every night and have two pieces of Vegemite toast.'
