Thandie Newton teams a fitted jacket with statement boots and a colourful bag for stroll in New York

Thandie Newton put her own spin on a fairly conservative outfit when she stepped out in New York on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old was pictured leaving the Bowery hotel, following her recent vacation in Mexico - and she looked lovely in a navy fitted jacket worn with skinny jeans.

She wore a grey slogan jumper which had the words: 'Close to my heart' emblazoned across the chest.

And giving her look a pop of colour, the Crash actress wore a bright bag on one shoulder and a pair of multi-coloured lace-up ankle boots.

Wearing minimal make-up, the lovely lady looked incredible with her curly hair framing her pretty features.

Earlier in the day, she attended the Women In The World Summit, a high-profile conference, which focuses on women’s struggles and triumphs around the world.

Spell it out in Thandie's Bella Freud sweater

She might have been wearing some bold color block boots and carrying a statement Sophie Anderson bag, but it was Thandie Newton's sweater that really did all the talking when she stepped out for a stroll in New York.

Featuring the words 'Close To My Heart', her grey wool jumper is by Bella Freud, a brand whose iconic slogan styles we've spotted on the likes of Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Caroline Flack.

Nobody does quirky knitwear quite like the designer, and whilst hearts have been the hottest print to wear for a while, why not spell it out? There's even a little heart logo on the cuff, so you really will be wearing your heart on your sleeve...

Also in attendance was Hillary Clinton, who apparently cut short her tour to speak at the event.

Earlier this month, the actress enjoyed a spring break at Cuixmala, an eco-paradise in the North American republic and posted some topless pictures from the beach

'Soaking up the sun and vibes at Cuixmala eco paradise in Mexico,' Thandie captioned one image of her meditating.

She is starring in a new NBC show, which focuses on a misbehaving boy, the indulgent parents who spoil him and a relative who 'slaps' his face at a barbecue in Brooklyn.

The episode begs the question: was that slap justified?

'It's so dramatic of an issue that it needs to be dealt with, and you see that as you watch the show,' Thandie Newton told USA Today. She plays a character who witnesses the exchange.
