In an armed hold-up gone wrong, a fearless service station assistant has stared down a young man attempting to rob him.

Victorian Police have released CCTV footage showing a would-be-robber striding into the Caltex on Willsmere Road in Kew, Melbourne, just before 2am on Wednesday morning.

The robber approached the attendant as he was mopping the floor of the service station, and held a gun to the shop attendant's face.

Denying that the criminal had a real weapon, the shop assistant refused to comply with any demands and barely flinched as the smaller man made a move towards him.

The shopkeeper, who had stopped cleaning to talk to the intruder motioned to keep mopping as the man then turned around and walked out of his store.

The robber was wearing black Skins shorts over his face in a makeshift balaclava.

I have great respect for the man. You never know if these vile criminals are high on booze or drugs, or just plain evil enough to maim or kill.
