Torres open to Atletico Madrid return as Chelsea forward reveals admiration for former team-mate Simeone
Fernando Torres has opened the door to a summer return to Atletico Madrid - which could help Chelsea’s pursuit of Diego Costa.
Torres has been in and out of Jose Mourinho’s plans this season, with the Portuguese manager alternating between the Spaniard and Samuel Eto’o.
Mourinho will look to reinvigorate his forward line in the summer, with Atletico striker Costa a leading candidate on the club’s shopping list.
On his way? Fernando Torres has revealed that he is open to the idea of a move back to Atletico Madrid
And Torres has not ruled out a return to his former club, with Costa possibly heading in the opposite direction.
When asked about a return to his first club, Torres replied: ‘In football you never know. You can’t be sure where you’re going to be tomorrow or in a week or in 10 years.
‘I have a lot of admiration for the manager Diego Simeone from when we were team-mates (at Atletico).
Struggle: Torres has had a frustrating season for Chelsea and looks likely to end his spell at Stamford Bridge
Respect: Torres revealed his admiration for Atletico Madrid boss and former team-mate Diego Simeone
Targets: Chelsea are in the market for a new striker with Diego Costa (left) and Radamel Falcao on their list
El Nino: Torres is still idolised by Atleti fans and a return to the club he once captained could be an option
‘He helped me a lot. He taught me many things in our seasons together at Atleti. I always want to work alongside people I admire.’
Costa will be a highly sought after player this summer after his excellent goal scoring record in Spain and in Europe this season.
Arsenal are also keen on the Spain international, Roman Abramovich’s financial clout leaves Chelsea in a strong position to land Costa this summer.
Replaced: Samuel Eto'o (above) seems to be Jose Mourinho's preferred choice
