Shrinking Fern Britton buys exercise bike to shift a few more pounds the hard way

Fern Britton may have had some help achieving her shrinking frame - but she is keeping the weight off the old fashioned way.

After initially claiming diet and exercise were to thank for her massive weight loss the This Morning presenter eventually admitted that her five stone loss was down to gastric band surgery.

Fern Britton in 2006: The presenter has shed five stone since having gastric band surgery

Fern has lost five stone, left, since being at her heaviest in 2006

The 50-year-old looked slimmer than ever as she loaded the bike into her car.

Looking sporty in black leggings and espadrilles, the This Morning presenter has clearly seen the benefit of using the exercise machine.

Fern was forced to admit her surgery after being exposed by a tabloid newspaper. She was unrepentant as she explained to This Morning viewers: 'There are some things a girl likes to keep to herself'.

The operation helped her bring her weight back under control  - which with the help of regular exercise she seems to be keeping off.

Low in fat: Fern in the new Ryvita advert

The star will also be reprising her role as the face of Ryvita for the first time since the scandal over the operation.

She had starred in a number of advertisements for the company which poked fun at her fuller figure, with her head superimposed on to a supermodel and a bodybuilder.

Despite the controversy, the company stood by the presenter and have put her at the centre of their latest £2million campaign.

In a spoof of a school sports day, Miss Britton oversees the sack race, which is a battle between traditional packs of crisps and Ryvita's new low fat alternative.

The baked snack claims to contain only 3% fat - 90% less than the amount in a regular packet of crisps.

She said of her new ad campaign: "Healthy living is hard - I know that. I have been working with Ryvita for many years - I am delighted that we are continuing the relationship as I have such fun making the ads and I greatly value our working relationship. "

The firm's marketing director Nigel Nelms said: "We at Ryvita are delighted to continue our association with Fern Britton. Once again she is the star of our advertising and brings her irreverent sense of humour and natural charisma to the small screen.

"We have developed a fantastic and successful working relationship with Fern over the years. She has played an intrinsic part in the success of our adverts and she has happily been superimposed on a skinny body, a builder's body and a yoga teacher's body and always sees the humorous side and has that rare ability to he able to laugh at herself - something which we believe is part of her down-to-earth charm."
