The son of Eastender's actress Laila Morse has been jailed for stealing her car and crashing it while on drugs and drunk.

Gerry Bromfield, 43, stole the Audi Q7 from his mother, who plays Big Mo in the soap, following an argument.

He was sentenced to eight months in prison for driving with excess alcohol.

He was banned for four years for aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Police were called to a dispute in the South London street and when they arrived he jumped into the car starting a police chase.

He hit two other cars before stopping the vehicle and running off. There were two other passengers who were also arrested on the scene.

Bromfield was yesterday jailed for eight months for aggravated vehicle taking after handing himself in at Peckham Police Station at 5.20am on February 28.

He was found to be four times the legal drink-drive limit and told police: 'I was driving. I nicked my mum's car and I crashed into the others. I wanted to kill myself.'

Prosecutor Mark Cotter said: 'Police attending some form of dispute saw an Audi drive off.

'It was followed, lost, and then found with front-end damage. It had also caused damage to two other vehicles.'

Defence barrister Abdul Kapadia said: 'He has a good family background. He wants to turn his life around but alcohol and drugs are a problem.'

Woolwich Crown Court heard that Bromfield, who is also Hollywood actor Gary Oldman's nephew, became a heroin addict and turned to a life of crime following his rebellious teenage years.

Despite being in trouble before, serving two years for theft and six weeks for drink driving, he still has his 66-year-old mother's support.

Bromfield was already banned for three other drink drive offences.

In 1997, Bromfield played the part of a drug dealer in the film Nil By Mouth which was written and directed by Oldman.
