It would be a hard colour for most women to pull off.

But Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls smouldered in dark purple lipstick that perfectly suited her olive skin as she walked the red carpet in a gown that showed off her long legs at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts' Costume Institute Gala in New York on Monday.

While Joan's lippy would have been perfect for last year's punk-themed ball, this year's theme was the more grown-up White Tie And Decorations.

And Joan's outfit was otherwise a perfect example of that.

The 25-year-old's elegant, strapless, silver dress hugged her figure like a second skin to the top of her thighs, where it gave way to a see-through chiffon skirt that draped beautifully into a small train.

The Victoria's Secret model boosted her 5ft 10ins with high-heeled silver sandals cuffed at the ankles.

Her brunette tresses were pulled to the side and styled in an intricate plait that reached below her bustline. She accessorised with an earring cuff, several gold and silver bracelets and an impressive array of rings.

Joan's gorgeous gown was designed by Vera Wang and the couple posed together on the red carpet.

Looking decades younger than her 64 years, Vera went for a long dress with swirling black and while panels, while her centre-parted black hair hung down to her waist..

Inside the bash, Joan stopped for a snap with model pals Lily Aldridge, 28, Kendall Jenner, 18, and Chinese supermodel Ming Xi, 24 - all dressed by Wang - which she posted on Instagram with the caption: 'Amazing time with these beauties at the #MetGala.'

On Saturday evening, Joan, who Forbes ranked as the eighth highest paid model in 2013, looked far more casual for Harry Josh's second annual pre-Met Ball Party at the Jane Hotel.

The TV host wore a white crocheted mini-dress that showed off a lot of skin.

Joan puts her beautiful colouring down to her very mixed heritage.

Speaking to Fashionista.com in February, she said: 'I come from a family that’s diverse and multi-racial. My mother is Puerto Rican, she’s light skinned, but if you know what a Puerto Rican is, it has African, it has Taíno Indian and it has Spaniard, so I’m all of that.

'My father is West Indian from Saint Thomas. I’m just an island girl. I’m West Indian, I’m Puerto Rican, I’m African, I’m Taíno, I have some Irish in me, I have some Indian, so I’m just a proud mutt.'

Art your writers that bad that you can't find a single writer to do it in one go? some people have multiple articles-you need multiple reporters to cover one person at one party for a fewhours?
