The Wembley stadium announcer was forced into an instant U-turn after naming Steven Gerrard as Tuesday night's man of the match just after his sending-off.

He quickly changed his mind and handed the award to Frank Lampard, who scored England's late equaliser from the penalty spot and took over from Gerrard as capain after the Liverpool man was shown the red card.

Ukraine v England In Focus

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

Obviously told to do a job on Tom Cleverley and kept the Manchester United midfielder's impact to a minimum.

Steve McLaren

The last time England played a competitive fixture without any of John Terry, Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand was in 2007 - the 3-2 defeat by Croatia under McClaren.

Steven Gerrard

He became the first England captain sent off at Wembley. Before last night, Paul Scholes was the only England player to have been sent off at the ground - in 1999.

Glen Johnson deserved MOM in my opinion. He stood out above Lamps and Gerrard.

Andy Townsend should be man of the match.

This has turned into a 1 game group, whoever wins the game between England and Ukraine goes to Brazil and the loser goes into a play off.

Utter rubbish. We missed Terry at the back. Gerrard was never MOM. ITV announced Lampard and rightly so. Gerrard was reckless as usual and overambitious with his passing as usual. Lampard had a fantastic game and for me, he's the best penalty taker in the world.

Not sure if Lampard is kept in a match with the hope of getting penalty. What if we didnt get the penalty?... and I dont think any of our players deserves to be the MOM.

Even with the sending off Gerrard was head and shoulders above the rest, and you can't blame the announcer for that one! Lampard was ineffective as per usual, but hope he keeps scoring those penalties, he's very good at those.
