A peaceful neighbourhood in the Rohini area in the Capital woke up to a gruesome triple murder early on Friday morning.

Yogendra Pratap Singh Chauhan (55), a chemical supplier, his wife Rekha (50) and their daughter Karishma (22) were found dead in their house by the daughter of a neighbour.

While Chauhan was found lying in a pool of blood on the ground floor of his two-storey house, Rekha and Karishma were found dead on the first floor. The murders have sent shock waves through the locality, which is otherwise believed to be peaceful and safe, with night guards on regular duty.

There are no signs of forced entry to the house, which the police said suggests somebody known to the family may be involved in the incident.

Preliminary investigations reveal that no valuables other than Karishma’s mobile phone and laptop are missing from the house, which would seem to rule out robbery as the motive behind the murders.

Karishma had done a mass communication course from Jagan Institute of Management Studies. She had recently completed her internship from a news channel and was looking for a job.

The police said Chauhan was attacked with a blunt object as he had several head injuries, while his wife and daughter were hit by an iron rod and later strangled or smothered to death.

Rekha was scheduled to go to Vaishno Devi in Jammu along with some neighbours on Friday morning. The incident came to light when their neighbourhood priest’s daughter, Sunaina, came to their residence at around 6:15am to inform Rekha about the bus timings.

When nobody answered the doorbell, Sunaina pushed the door and found it unlatched. She immediately went inside and saw Chauhan lying in pool of blood, the police said.

Sunaina raised the alarm, after which the neighbours entered the house and discovered the bodies of the two women on the first floor.

“Two pillows were found near the heads of Rekha and Karishma, who were lying in opposite directions on the floor,” said Naresh Kumar Gupta, a neighbour and one of the first people to reach the spot.

A murder case has been registered in K.N. Katju Police Station in outer Delhi.

The bodies were taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital for post-mortem examination on Friday afternoon.

RECENT CASES OF VIOLENCE

Chauhan is survived by two daughters — Hema (36), a divorcee who works as a teacher and lives separately, and Jolly (27), who is married and lives in Faridabad.

His elder son Vikram Chauhan died in an accident two years ago. Vikram’s wife and four-year old boy live at Tri Nagar.

“We are investigating all angles and trying to find the exact sequence of events,” a senior police officer said.

Police sources added that Chauhan had filed a writ petition in the district court demanding a crime branch probe into his son’s accident.

Although he had received compensation from the insurance company, he had not been satisfied with the investigations.
