The character of Gemma Bovery is a bored English woman who moves to the same town in France where Gustave Flaubert wrote his original 1857 novel.

The similarities between herself and the vintage woman are instantly recognised by a curious neighbour with a love of literature.

As Gemma finds herself drifting further and further from her husband Charlie (played by Jason Flemyng), she ends up paying more than a few visits to her male neighbour's 'chateau'.

Fabrice Luchini plays Martin Joubert, the voyeur and Bovery obsessive in the mixed language film.

The older man watches on and tries to warn Gemma that the road she's travelling down, of sex and betrayal will only lead to heartache.

The film debuted last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and has already been released in France.
