I heart baby: Mothers mark their love in ink as Hollywood trend for 'mommy tattoos' spreads

There's nothing new about a celebrity mother heading to the tattoo parlour to celebrate the birth of a child.

From Angelina Jolie to Victoria Beckham, the indelible mark of inked artwork goes-hand-in-hand with many an A-list baby in Hollywood.

But the trend is fast-spreading, and mothers across America are opting to symbolise their children's lives in the once-unconventional way.

Baby face: Mothers are marking their babies' births by having pictures of their children permanently tattooed to their bodies, says Fox 4 News

According to Fox 4 News, gone are the days of keeping baby shoes and having family portraits - 'mommy tattoos' are the modern way to mark a new baby's arrival.

And some are so dedicated to the occasion that they have chosen not a date or a symbol, but an image of their own child as a tattoo. One photo, shown by the news station, even makes a permanent feature of a pair of baby footprints.

The network helpfully informs mothers, however, to wait until a baby is a year old until tattooing its image to a mother's skin - to give time for facial features to develop.

Mother-of-six, Amber Adams, told the news network that she marked her children's births with floral tattoos on her feet, which she calls her 'flower garden'.

Yet to update her 'garden' with fresh tattoos marking her most recent births, the Dallas, Texas mother is determined to add more flowers to her feet.

She is not alone. Fox's Facebook page is buzzing with images from moms who have taken the not inconsiderable decision to add permanent art to their bodies out of love.

Angela Taylor, a licensed therapist, told Fox that she believes the trend has spread because tattoos are 'something to keep forever' and make a personal statement of womanhood.

'It's a way to reclaim the body,' she said. 'You get to take your body back, it's the sexy way to say: "I'm more than just a mom."'

But, on the flip side, she has also seen regret for tattoos - especially when they inadvertently encourage children to have their own inked artwork at a young age.
