Feeling relaxed, Russell? Crowe dresses down in a flannelette shirt and trainers for late night TV appearance

While he wasn't in his tracky dacks, it didn't look as though Russell Crowe was dressing to impress when he appeared on US television on Thursday.

Instead of wearing a suit or perhaps a tidy sweater like the majority of male guests tend to do, the New Zealand-born actor was his normal no frills self.

He arrived on set of the Late Night With Seth Myers show in jeans and an unbuttoned flannelette shirt, and clearly opting for comfort, completed his look with a pair of trainers.

To top things off the Hollywood heavyweight, who looked quite at home in his casual get-up, sported a rather bristly beard.

Settling in to speak about his new film The Water Diviner, which premiered in Sydney last December, Russell quickly changed tact and began opening up about the antics that go on behind the scenes of a movie.

Recounting one particularly memorable moment, the 51-year-old larrakin revealed that he once lost an eye-watering £2,000 (AU$3,800) in an orange throwing bet.

'I obsessively got involved in a competition throwing oranges from a fourth story roof into a basket that was about 60 metres away,' he said of a bet he with some crew members.

'I lost £2,000, I never got that orange in the damn basket!'

On a more successful occasion meanwhile, the proud Rabbitohs owner pocketed £100 (AU$195) while filming his infamous 'are you not entertained?' moment on the set of Gladiator.

He said the film's assistant director bet that he couldn't throw his sword into the emperor's box three times in a row and impressively he did, even after the weapon was replaced by a rubber one on the third attempt.

Russell was looking a little more sophisticated just a couple of days earlier when he sat down with Jimmy Fallon.

For that appearance the actor was dressed in head-to-toe black in a sharp suit, tie and polished dress shoes.

Russell famously shocked television viewers in Australia last year when he wore tracksuit pants to an interview with Sunday Night.

A host of comments flooded Twitter shortly afterwards with one viewer saying: 'Hoodies should be banned', while another remarked: 'Nice to see Russell wore his good tracksuit Sunday Night.'
