America loves its heroes. And while time is not always kind to everyone, the legacy heroes have built will carry them forever.

Richard Dean Anderson, known as the great MacGyver and Lieutenant General Jack O'Neill, was hard to recognize while grocery shopping in Malibu, California on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old former hunk of television, while naturally not quite as strapping as he used to be, still appeared to be very happy and content.

The first five years of his career were spent on General Hospital and the consecutive three years on CBS shows.

His biggest break came in the mid 80s while playing the leading role on the American adventure show MacGyver.

Secret agent Angus MacGyver - after whom the term 'MacGyverism' has been coined - was known for 'jerry-rigging' objects by quickly recreating them in an innovative way in order to solve a problem or accomplish a task.

Going incognito: the all-American TV craftsmen loaded up the back of his vehicle with groceries

Sporting a mustache and messy silver hair, the 'brainy and brawny' actor smiled as he pushed his cart through the parking lot and unloaded his groceries.

His dark blue sweatpants, white joggers, and white long sleeve shirt combination seemed fitting for a normal day of running errands.

The aging legend sported glasses tucked into his collar and walked back to the car carefree with a bag of pita chips in his hand.

After the MacGyver show ended in 1992, Anderson jumped into the world of sci-fi, playing the role of Lieutenant General Jack O'Neill on the Stargate TV series.

Taking a shot at things behind the camera, he served as executive producer of Stargate as well as two MacGyver movies prior - maintaining his leading roles.

Many years on Stargate earned him a following among the intergalactic fan community, and he recently re-connected with those fans by making an appearance at the StarFest Convention last weekend in Denver.

The Minneapolis native spent a large part of his career traveling between north Minnesota, Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Now settled in Malibu, he helped design and build his Midwest styled home, which was featured six years ago in Architectural Digest after it was finished.

The semi-retired actor and producer shifted his focus to being a single dad to his 16-year-old daughter Wylie Anderson.
