Angelina Jolie briefed the council as special envoy for the UN on refugee issues on Friday morning at UN headquarters in New York. When asked about Jolie's planned briefing, Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari (pictured right) responded: 'She is beautiful'. What he failed to acknowledge was Jolie's blistering attack on the failure of the world's leaders to act on the country's refugee crisis. The 39-year-old mother-of-six, who said she has made 11 visits to Syrian refugees in the region since the crisis began in 2011, called the failure to help some four million driven out of Syria over the conflict as the 'world's lowest point' and blasted world leaders who are 'paralyzed' by disagreement.
The rape of justice: Damning new evidence of Labour peer Lord Janner's child sex abuse covered up by police and social workers for over 20 years
The most damning evidence yet of how the Establishment hid Lord Janner's alleged child abuse can be revealed today. Police and social workers were told more than 20 years ago that the peer (pictured left in 1974 with a child not connected with abuse claims, and right with the Queen in 2003) took a vulnerable boy to Labour Party offices and Parliament before molesting him in his marital bed. A ten-page witness statement (pictured inset) details the alleged victim's harrowing ordeal at the hands of Janner. But all references to the politician were removed from the child's social services file, according to legal papers obtained by the Mail.

'Evil s***': Kate's controversial Uncle Gary in furious row after tweeting photo of headphone wearing cyclist he accused of running over his pet chihuahua Cheech
Gary Goldsmith, the controversial brother of Kate's mother Carole Middleton, posted a picture of the alleged culprit who hit his chihuahua, Cheech, on social media (right). His accompanying message included the words: 'Evil s***... Coming to get ya.' Mr Goldsmith, who regularly posts pictures of his beloved pet on social media (inset) has vowed to find the cyclist - saying his wife Julie-Ann (pictured together, left) is 'in bits' after the incident.
Crying toddler removed from London-bound flight and met by police after being deemed a 'security breach'
A crying nineteen-month-old girl was removed from a plane and met by armed police and counter-terrorism officers after being deemed a security threat. After setting off from Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, bound for London Luton, Sarina Aziz became agitated after cabin crew asked that she sit on her parents' lap.
Furious row erupts over 'shameful' Miliband claim that Mediterranean refugee deaths are a 'direct result' of Cameron's Libya intervention
The Labour leader used a keynote campaign speech today to suggest the deaths of hundreds of refugees fleeing North Africa could have been avoided if the Prime Minister had done more following the 2011 intervention in Libya to remove the former dictator Colonel Gaddafi. In a briefing note sent out before the speech, Labour went further - claiming the crisis was 'in part a direct result' of Mr Cameron's foreign policy. The provocative allegation has provoked a furious response from the Tories who this morning demanded that Mr Miliband apologise for the 'outrageous and disgraceful' remarks.
Couple's anger after lifetime of paying off their mortgage is wasted after house value collapsed because council scheme to sell neighbouring homes for just £1 has turned street into a 'ghetto'
A couple who spent a lifetime paying off their mortgage have said it was a waste of time after a council scheme to sell neighbouring homes for just £1 has turned the street into a 'ghetto'. Linda and George Hunter, who raised their four children in their home in Garrick Street, Wavertree, Liverpool, became mortgage free around 15 years ago. But eight years ago, the street became part of a regeneration scheme and the council bought properties and boarded them up ready for demolition. Estate agents say the couple would now struggle to sell their home for much more than £1 as other houses in the street are being sold off at that price by the council.
'I won't quit my mates': Richard Hammond last to rule out return to Top Gear as producer launches scathing attack on 'meddling' BBC and Clarkson plots their next move in the pub
Richard Hammond (left) has ruled out returning to Top Gear, becoming the final presenter to leave the motoring show as he vowed (tweet inset, left): 'I won't quit my mates.' Ex-Top Gear producer Andy Wilman (inset yesterday with Clarkson, Hammond and May) accused 'meddling' BBC executives of pressuring him to hire a female presenter before the show's 2002 relaunch. He said chiefs at the corporation also originally vetoed hiring James May, claiming the three were all 'middle-class public-schoolish blokes of a similar age'. Mr Wilman, who is a childhood friend of Clarkson (pictured at a pub yesterday evening, right), also branded the BBC's decision to sack the presenter a 'tragedy'. Mr Wilman sensationally resigned from the BBC yesterday, following a meeting with the three former presenters at Clarkson's flat in west London.

Michael Schumacher's son Mick set for Formula 4 debut as 16-year-old protege follows in father's footsteps
The 16-year-son of Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula One champion, is set to make his debut in the same sport this weekend. Mick Schumacher will compete in the Formula 4 category, in what is regarded as a stepping stone for junior drivers hoping to reach the top. By doing so, he will follow in the footsteps of his father - who is still recovering from a ski accident at his home in Switzerland - who won a record 91 races in Formula 1.
Prince Charles joins his son Harry and world leaders to mark the 100th anniversary of the disastrous Gallipoli landings which claimed 140,000 lives during World War One
The royals (left) met descendants of fallen soldiers on the Royal Navy's flagship HMS Bulwark in Turkey's Dardanelles straits, the same crucial waters the Allies had hoped to control 100 years ago. Instead tens of thousands lost their lives on both sides in a nine-month battle between the German-backed Ottoman forces and Allies including Australian, British and New Zealand troops trying to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war. Today, soldiers from both the Ottoman and Allied sides lie close together in separate cemeteries on the Gallipoli peninsula on the western edge of Turkey in what has long been seen as a powerful symbol of reconciliation between former enemies. In recognition of this, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will host leaders including Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott (top right) and New Zealand Premier John Key as well as Charles and Harry. Meanwhile, a sea of poppies (bottom right) blanketed Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia, ahead of the centenary commemorations.
Pictured: Diversity officer who banned whites from her 'anti-racism' event at British university wiping away fake tear in front of 'no white men' sign
A picture of Bahar Mustafa, student union Welfare and Diversity Officer at Goldsmiths University in London, pretending to cry was posted online shortly after she was accused of discrimination. The handmade poster also refers to a ban on cisgender men, a term used of those whose mental gender and physical sex match, which is the opposite of transgender. Today Goldsmiths' students' union said it 'wholeheartedly' denied accusations it was racist and sexist. Miss Mustafa was criticised by students after she invited them to a meeting to discuss 'diversifying the curriculum' but told white people and men 'not to come' as it was only open to BME [black and minority ethnic] women.

Shocking moment drunken soldiers including Buckingham Palace guardsman carried out horrifying assault where victim's head was stamped on 18 TIMES - and they avoided jail
Shaun Smith, 25, and Jason Collins, 22, had been drinking for hours when they were caught on CCTV attacking two men near their barracks at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire last April. The pair were filmed kicking and punching one of their victims in the head before chasing the other round a tree and dragging him across a main road to be beaten. Smith (far right) is a guardsman for the Scots Guard while Collins (left appearing at court, right) has served at Buckingham Palace for the Welsh Guard. They claimed they had been followed out of a nightclub by their victims who threatened to stab them and were acting in self-defence. Despite the brutality of the incident, both were spared jail after character statements from their army superiors were given in court.

Eva Kor, 81, arrived in Lueneburg to give evidence at the trial of Oskar Groening, 93 - known as the 'bookkeeper of Auschwitz'. The pair were seen embracing as they met in the courtroom. Groening is accused of serving at Auschwitz between May and June 1944, when some 425,000 Jews from Hungary were taken there and almost immediately gassed to death. Speaking about the extraordinary incident, Ms Kor said: 'Former enemies can get along as human beings. What on earth do we want to tell the world? Killing each other has never created anything good.'
