Just don't ask us about Black Widow! Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner goof around on GMA after grovelling apology over 'sl**' and 'wh**e' comments

Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner made headlines for the wrong reasons on Thursday when they angered Avengers fans by calling Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow a ‘sl**’ and ‘wh**e’.

But after a grovelling apology, they continued on with the promotional trail for the upcoming Age Of Ultron movie on Friday with an appearance on Good Morning America in New York City.

And this time, Chris and Jeremy made sure not to say or do anything that could get them in hot water.

The actors instead goofed around outside the studio with Avengers co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo, but were not joined by Chris Hemsworth or Scarlett Johansson.

Clearly having formed a close bond after working on two films for the franchise together, the group looked like they were having a great time together, and Jeremy said they’d had ‘a lot of F-U-N’ making the movie.

Robert added: ‘I think whenever the first in the franchise is super successful, it’s always a little daunting to make sure you don’t let down the audience. But at this point I think we all just know each other really well, and we worked really hard and we had a good time.’

The foursome answered questions from the crowd, and Chris was asked if he feels pressure to live up to the legacy of Captain America.

‘Yeah, I’m not doing a good job right now, I’m shivering! I’m such a baby about it,’ he said. ‘Absolutely, but it’s a good bar to set, he’s a fun character to play. And if you can in any way take a bit of him home with you then that’s a good day.’

One fan wanted to know who his heroes are, and he said: ‘It’s a generic response but it’s my parents – and Mark Ruffalo,’ after the Hulk star looked at him hopefully. ‘For me my parents were a big inspiration, I wouldn’t have anything without them, so they’re top for me.’

Jeremy said he ‘took away friendship with an amazing group of people’ when asked about the film, and gave a hint about what viewers can expect from it.

‘A lot of fun interesting things are revealed. The relationships are the best bit about it for me, they deepen and they also splinter. There’s new goodies and baddies and I’m just glad to be a part of it.’

Meanwhile, Mark said he met The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno at ComicCon and asked him for tips on his Hulk growl, adding that he feels ‘costume envy’ for ‘just about everybody’ on set.

Mark was also seen checking out Robert’s stylish glasses after saying that his own were stolen from the set.

When Robert was asked what the best advice he has ever been given is, he joked about the cold New York weather and said: ‘When it’s freezing outside, wear layers.’

The conversation reached a more serious note when the actors discussed the charity work they do with children.

‘We always fall short, but the characters we play really represent something so it’s a great meditation for us to just recognise that we can aspire to be like these characters that we play,’ Robert explained.

‘We’ll never attain it. And giving back to the kids is definitely something that keeps us in check and none of us would turn that down.’

The Iron Man star looked very dapper as always in a purple suit jacket, but the other actors kept it simple, with Chris and Mark in jeans and bomber jackets and Jeremy sporting a camel coat.

A day earlier Jeremy and Chris both said sorry for being ‘juvenile and offensive’ after using derogatory terms to describe Scarlett’s character in the movie.

The pair - who play Hawkeye and Captain America respectively - were asked by Digital Spy about their thoughts on Black Widow being with Mark’s Bruce Banner, after many believed she would have a romance with one of the characters they play.

'She's a sl**,' Jeremy said, deadpan, and the two stars immediately burst out laughing.

Chris added: 'I was going to say something along that line. She's a complete wh**e.'

Jeremy got into more hot water for adding, 'She's got a prosthetic leg anyway,' and Chris concluded: 'She's leading everybody on.'

The pair quickly apologised. Chris said in a statement to MailOnline: 'Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America.

'We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.'

Jeremy said in his own statement: 'I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.'

Avengers: Age Of Ultron hits cinemas on May 1.
